My husband and I are looking into having the vasectomy procedure done. We have gone over the information from the doctor and now are talking things over. I ultimately want the decision to be his because it is his body...and his capibility to concieve children. We have two sons. One is 3 and the other is 1 year old. We definitely do NOT want any more children. I was wondering if anyone has any advice involving a vasectomy. How painful was it? Was there any complications? How long was he laid up? And are there any unexpected pregnancies even after having the proceedure?
My husband had his vasectomy last Fall, and it was fine. My husband is the biggest baby EVER and he even admitted it was a piece of cake. After the procedure he laid on the couch with a bag of frozen peas on the area and wasn't in any pain. My brother-in-law had his done a year ago and his experience was exactly the same.
Speaking for my husband who had this done about fifteen years ago I can say that it was not really that bad. He had it done on a Friday so that he would be able to "rest" over the weekend and was back to work on Monday. I will tell you that when they say to wear loose fitting pants and to not over do it to follow that advice. He wasn't able to lift anything the first day but by Saturday he was ready to go. We didn't tell anyone that he was having it done until sometime later and no one even knew that he had any type of surgery earlier in the day when we saw them that night.
The vasectomy is a wonderful procedure. My husband had a little soreness for a few days, but well worth it in his opinion. Not having to worry about an unplanned pregnancy is a very freeing feeling. Use protection until a few months later when they test to make sure there are no little swimmers getting through. There are statistics about the effectiveness of vasectomies that are quite impressive.
My husband had it done last year. He went in early Friday morning, was out within a 1/2 hour. He iced it and was laid up all weekend. He was back to work on Monday. (he's a mechanic for large construction equip.) He was a little tender for a few weeks, but otherwise fine.
Follow the instructions and all will be well.
I've known of a few men who have had the procedure. Only the one who thought he didn't have to follow the instructions had problems.
My husband had it done with only a little pain. However his grew back and we did get pregnant twice afterwards. Once was a miscarriage and the other resulted in a beautiful baby girl. He had gone back for his checks and we knew that his swimmers were still around. So we did use other birth control.
He now has number 2 scheduled, hopefully this one will stick :)
Hi! My husband and I also decided after two children that we did not want anymore. We opted for him to get the vasectomy because it seemed safest and easiest (I didn't want to have to worry about birth control for the next 20-30 years!). My husband did not feel pain during the procedure, as they numbed the area. It was painful for a day or two afterwards, but nothing that wasn't controllable with pain reliever and ice packs. He was on our couch for the first 24 hours, but was OK to move around after that. He wasn't allowed to lift anything for several days (a week, maybe?), including our baby. His clinic also does regular follow-up testing, so we can be assured that we will not have any "accidents" (so far, so good!). It was certainly the best choice for us. Good luck!
