I am 17 weeks pregnant with my 3rd child, and I have some painful varicose veins at my right ankle. I also have some milder ones at my right knee. By the end of the day, my ankle is swollen, bruised appearing, and throbbing in pain. I am interested in buying some compression stockings. Does anyone have any brand recommendations? What pressure do you recommend also? Did you order them on-line? Thanks so much!

What can I do next?

I definately recommend compression stockings. I bought the 21 mmHg of pressure ones because the ones with less pressure didn't work as well. I kept going up! By the end of the day, during my pregnancy, my ankles were the same size as my knees. They hurt sooooo bad. I started by wrapping them up in ace bandages, but the compression stockings work much better. I bought mine from a nursing uniform website called www.allheart.com They're expensive, but totally worth it if you've got to survive another five months of pregnancy.

Hi L.,
I have a friend that sells special garments for medical needs, including compression items. Here is her contact info: Ada Storto <____@____.com>
I think she will actually come to your home or office to fit you and figure out what you need.

In the meantime, when you get home in the evening get off those feet and elevate them above your heart, even after you get the compression stockings.

compression hose can be purchased at med supply stores for about 8$ per pair, you need to shop around on-line they were 3 to 4 times that price some times up to a 100.00 . . . when I was preg with my 2nd son I began getting veins but I increased my walk each day from 1 mile to 2 miles and kept my feet elevated when I was sitting I only wore the socks at night while I slept because that's when I developed the most pain . . with my 1st son I didn't have these at all . . . .but I was more active with my 1st son . . working 40 + hrs and going to college 2 nights a week. . with my 2nd son I wasn't working full time . . .

I bought mine on www.medbarn.com - they are the same brand, Gabrialla, my OB/GYN carries and they are much cheaper than most. Jobst is the most expensive at $100 but these are about 30. My veins worsen with each pregnancy so my with my first I tried both and toward the end went with the higher support and with my second only went with the higher support. Now I buy my regular support hose from them.
