Vagina Sensitivity

My daughter (2 and a half) tries to lock her legs, struggle and sometimes cry when I have to wipe her when changing her diaper. She started doing it after she saw a doctor and it's gotten progressively worse. I was in the room, he did nothing but look and she doesn't seem real red. To tell you the truth I was never given a run down of what a normal or healthy looking vagina was suppose to look like. She only seems to be a deep pinkish on the very inside of her vagina and nothing else. I thought perhaps it was the cold wipes but I used warm ones at that didn't seem to help much. I have perused the site and notices some suggestions in bathing and eating yogurt without loads of sugar so I'll try that. Any thing else I need to know? Thanks so much for your help in advance!

What can I do next?

My daughter did the same thing around 18 months. We started saying "easy, nice, gentle" when we wiped REALLY gently. I guess I was just wiping too hard, after a couple of months she would say "easy, easy" when we started to change her, and stopped resisting the wiping.

The only thing I can think of is to make sure you are wiping gently.

~It is probably just a phase. Maybe she is getting ready to start potty training?

My older daughter used to do this. It started when she had diaper rash and became a habit. I hated forcing her because I didn't want the behavior to get worse. So, I basically would wait her out. I would just calmly say, "You can't get off the changign table until you let Mommmy wipe." Then I did it very gently and calmly if she relaxed even for a second. It lasted a few weeks.

It takes two people to change my youngest. During the day I run the risk of getting kicked in the head right now. It is horrible. So I am with you!! Try the yogurt like you said. And i couldn't hurt to give her a little probiotics too. that way if she has more yeast down there then her body likes it will help her adjust and also the area will regulate a lot better. You can get them specifically for little kids to. I cant think of the name of it its got a yellow lid though. you can get it in chewables or a powder form you can add to meals. As soon as I feel a yeast infection coming on I boost my intake on probiotics myself. If you have ever had a yeast infection you will know it is very itchy and painful. So if she does seem uncomfortable my guess is that its too much yeast:)....I am not a professional though. I would give the nurse a call just to see what she thinks.

I would continue to put on diaper cream between changes. If you don't want to use diaper cream, you can use vasoline. Hope this helps!

It could be a few things. The wipes could be an issue, as Megan M. said. it could also be that she is becoming body conscience and was a little overwhelmed by the check up. Having a "stranger" there can be unnerving for us adults imagine what it's like to a little one just starting to realize that place is very private. If this is the case try talking to her before changes, try and keep her calm, talk to her through it, move slowly. It might help, I know changes get to be routine, but the "let's get this over with" mentality may be upsetting to her now.

It is also possible that she is one of those super sensitive people when it comes to that area. This issue in grown women can make sex a very painful unpleasant event. If this is the case, there isn't much that you personally can do. Stock up on A+D ointment and be as gentle as possible.

My daughter did this to me and it freaked me out SO bad. When my husband changed a poopy diaper she was FINE but if I did? No way, she screamed like I was trying to rip her leg off. At my wits end I switched from huggies wipes to pampers (i hated the pampers because they were so wet and not as durable) and problem solved. The wipes were too rough and they were hurting her, my hubby was super gentle with changing her so it didn't hurt her , granted I wasn't being rough by any means. Now I don't have to clean poop off my shirt, arms, and changing table or get kicked in the face. You sound like you are going through exactly what I was.. I didn't think the huggies wipes were too rough but apparently she did.

I have no idea, but please let us know if you find anything else out. My 2 year old does the same thing, although she's not in diapers, but in the bath tub when I'm trying to clean her down there she hates it, closes her legs and pushes my hand away.

My son has super sensitivity on his bum from time to time. When this happens, I sit him on the toilet and pour warm water over him and wipe gently with a wipe. I only use hypoallergenic, all-natural wipes.

For a time, my husband was using A & D ointment or Balmex, but I took a sniff of it and detected a slight mentholated aroma. No more of that. If I can smell it, then it may be burning very sensitive skin. When there is a bad rash, I often use Neosporin to take the burn out.

Also, do you powder her? Sometimes powder can clump up and irritate delicate girl parts. When I have to powder either of my daughters, I make sure it does not get near the vagina. Also, you may want to switch out diaper brands. Good luck to you.

Could be a thousand different things, or nothing at all, just a phase, but I would def discuss it with her doc!
