Hi,
It seems that only part of my baby's umbilical cord fell off. It looks like there is still a piece in her bellybutton. Is this normal?

What can I do next?

those little cord stumps are just weird for new moms! Keep it dry with the hydrogen peroxide and make sure to put a little nyomicin or other ointment on in (not too much just a dot). I've know lots of babies and lots of moms and I've never heard of any problems with infection - but lots of wierd gross comments about the cord stump. You're doing fine - take a deep cleansing breath (sound familiar?) and allow yourself not to worry!

Ugh. This happened with my son and it took forever to heal!!! Most likely it will be fine, it just might need a bit more time, but just keep watching it. Since he's still so little you'll be going to the doctor every few weeks so make sure the Ped looks at it if it's still gooey. They told me to use hydrogen peroxide and they had to use the sulfer sticks (or whatever they are) a few times on his belly button before it would finally dry out. Sometimes the way those darn buttons are shaped makes it harder for the gooey part to dry if it's way down in there! Good luck, hopefully it won't be drama like ours! ;)

It just has to heal...It is totally normal to look sort of odd or enlarged. It may look like only part fell off, but it isn't something that will fall off in pieces. The rest will either shrink or dry up, or maybe your little one will end up with an outie. Either way give it a month or two, and you will see a huge difference.

My DD had the same thing... It was still there at her 2 month checkup, and the pediatrician just brushed it off. (I didn't want to mess with it... but it just brushed right off. She didn't even really pick at it, just brushed a little harder than I did.)

Please this is from my recent experience with a friend/co worker sister and my not pertain to you. This happen to my friend sister son, but no one noticed it. He is 6 years old now, this was only diagnosed because the sister remarried and move to TX from PR. He son for years was complaining about stomach pain and was a picky eater so they thought, because the doctors in PR said he was fine. Well he was not. The doctor in TX found that because when he was an infant that the umbilical cord did not all come out and the cord did not desolve properly that it cause tumors in his stomach he is going through Cimo now. They said they have very few cases of this. He is doing okay but has a long road ahead of him. So I do not want to alarm you, but I would definitly have it check out really good. They say things happen for a reason and I am a big believer of that. Maybe it was for me to let people know that this can happen.
