Trouble Breastfeeding

Looking for some good tips. I BF my daughter for her first year of life with little to no trouble. My son, just now 10 weeks has been more difficult. Everything went great at first, but around 6 weeks I started to have some trouble with my milk production. While they were circumcising him after birth I became engorged and had to use a pump. They returned him to me sleepy from anesthesia and he didn't eat until his next feeding an hour later. I continued pumping this extra bottle or two every day (and freezing it) for the first 10 days or so. After that I was exhausted and went to only BF no pumping. I should mention that my baby was born at 7lb 12 oz and was at 10lb 3oz by his 2 week visit. He is now 13lb 6oz at his 2month. Around week 6 I felt as if I was drying up. I pumped every 2 hours for one whole day, ate more carbs, got more sleep and felt things pick back up in a day or two. Now 4 weeks later I am running into the same problems only this time in addition to drying up my baby is fussy... he is hungry and so I thawed my BM and actually gave him a bottle tonight. I am wondering am I going to run into this problem every month? I have not had a period yet so I don't know exact cycle yet? Is this dry period related to working out? Not enough carbs? What is wrong? I drink a ton of water, and don't think that is the issue (I drink enough water that I almost never feel thirsty). Any advice would be helpful. Also, I take a very complete multivitamin (over $100 a month) that covers minerals and phytonutrients in addition to the standard MV milue.

What can I do next?

I am a BF mom too, I fed my middle girl up till 3 weeks until the next one.(2yrs) I have found that nursing tea by Yogi is the best for me, you may want to take a green drink as well. I would also call the manufacture of your vitamin and ask if its ok to take while BF maybe stay on your prenatels for now. Some herbs can decrease milk as well, cilantro, parsley, kale?, some meds, I had a cough the DR gave me Musinx and he knew I was nursing, the pharmacy said it will dry me up, so I stopped. But it sounds like your doing what you should. I'm telling you the tea works so good for me, I would drink like 3 cups a day or until it kicks in. and it taste good too. You know that you can from your first so don't give up! You said you workout alot, you might want to take a break to see if that is what is causing it.

He's going through a growth spurt. It is completely normal for them to eat every 1.5-3 hours around the clock when they hit these growth spurts. Let him end the feedings so he gets the fatty hind milk. If he is switched from one breast to the other too soon, he will only get the watery foremilk and not the hind milk. Some babies are gassy and fussy if they are not allowed to nurse long enough to get the hind milk.

You may also seem less engorged as your body starts to adjust to these feeding frenzies.

The main thing is to stay hydrated and to eat to satisfy hunger. As long as you nurse on demand your body will produce enough milk for your baby. The more you nurse, the more milk you will produce.

A sure sign indicator of whether he is getting adequate breast milk is his weight gain and if he has wet and dirty diapers. He's gaining, so I would not worry in that department. If he is having at least 4-6 wet diapers in a day and stools at least once a week (most breastfed babies stool more than this but it is normal for some to stool less after 2 months of age) then that is a sign he is getting adequate breast milk.

Congrats to you and your new baby.

Hi,

You can take fenugreek to increase milk supply. You can also drink mother's milk tea, both available at Whole foods. Also, don't pump only breastfeed. When you pump it confuses your body and your body is not able to regulate itself to your baby's needs.

I was having trouble with my supply, so my pedi recommended that I go see Suzanne Juel, a lactation consultant and it helped me get my supply up. Her number is ###-###-#### and she is located in Kingwood, but she put me on More Milk Plus for two weeks and that did the trick. It might be a little further than you want to go, but it was worth it to me. Good luck!! Amy

Not sure if this applies or not, but if you're taking any type of birth control with hormones, that could be the reason for milk drying up.
