Trick-or-Treating

The past couple of years my kids' trick-or-treating has been a flop. We tried the trick-or-treat street at the mall, and it was crowded and not worth waiting for. When we went in my nieghborhood, it seems no one is home, or they aren't into the whole halloween thing. Any suggestions to make this year more fun?

We live around 96th/Pierce and the neighborhood just north is a blast. Almost all of the houses have their lights on and have fun decorations. There are always groups of us parents walking around getting time to catch up with eachother and telling the latest horror stories about our kiddos while the kids are dashing door to door, getting as much candy as they can.

I have an 11 year old and an 1 year old. My oldest had a hard time getting into it until we started meeting up with other kids from school. Now it's just as much of a walking party for them then about the candy. Having a big group to go with and going in an area where the houses all participate make a huge difference for him.

Good luck, be safe and have fun!!!

Hi A.

We go over to our church every year it is Faith Bible Chapel and it is located on 64th & Ward. They have stuff to do for all ages and it is warm, not to packed and the kids get enough candy but not enough to last you till next Easter. You should check it out it is open to everyone and the kids can come dressed up. If you have any other questions you can check out www.fbci.org and the times are from 5:30-8:30

The Susan Duncan YMCA is having a Halloween event tomorrow, the 25th of Oct from 5:30-7:30 PM. There will be games, candy, prizes and a sort of haunted house. It will probably be crowded, but the price is right...free. The Y is on the corner of 64th and Eldridge. Have fun!!

Also, I think I got a flyer in the mail about a trunk or treat at the Friends Church on 66th. It was on Halloween night, you could look up their number and get the info.

The Thornton Rec Center is doing a "Trunk or Treat" this Saturday (tomorrow) from 7-9 p.m. at 107th and Colorado Blvd. About 50+ cars will decorate their trunks and hand out candy. It's $1 per kid, and it's really fun for the kids to see all the Halloween decoreations and get their "trick or treat" in.

I also recommend Boo at the Zoo this weekend - lots of candy, see the animals, some games and treats, and not overly crowded or uncomfortable. My kids loved it at your kids' ages.

I've not done trick or treating with my kids, but our church is sponsering a Halloween party with lots of candy, jumping castles, games, prizes, etc. It is Friday night at Thimmig K-8 school in Henderson 6-9 pm. I'm sure there are other events like this closer to your area as well. Arvada may have a city-sponsered event, I know Westminster does.

Hi! Ever heard of a "Trunk or Treat"? We go to one every year. It's when people pull their cars up in the church parking lot, ripe the entrance off, decorate their car trunks or hatchbacks and the kids go trick or treating from car to car. It's fun, safe, and fast (over in about 30 minutes)and a great way to get a bunch of treats. I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon) and our congregations are all over the place. (There is no proselyting, just halloween fun and anyone can come) If you'd like more info , I can get on their website and find the location nearest you in Arvada(We're in Aurora)
Also, ever done the BOO at the Zoo? Super fun and depending on the weather not too crowded...you get to see animals, get candy and they have fun zoo lights at night.
Good luck!

The last responce is correct, great area. When my kids were that little every year my sister and her son, would come with us. Or a friend with a kid. We would also dress up for halloween and just act like the kids. We even had our own bag and would take turns going up with the kids to the door and get candy too. The people handing out candy would of course ask or say something and our response was, " well we have to walk around with them so why not have a little fun and candy too. The kids loved it, and we always had a great laugh. Then we'd get home, check all the candy. I've heard you can get it x-rayed at some hospitals but don't quote me on it (call around to find out) But we always just took out the ones that the wrapper was dammaged or open, cause we pretty much trusted the area we went. And every year we would either go to a new neighborhood, or a different section of ours depending on the weather. Anyways, my kids miss Trick Or Treating and every now and then still go out on their own. And it is still their favorite holiday, not cause of the candy but because of the memories.
Hope you have a great Halloween.

I also live in Arvada, and in past years we have driven to neighborhoods that are more trick or treat friendly. One year we went to the Southmoore neighborhood to trick or treat with friends who live there. Another year we went to Washington Park. Both times we were successful. Or, you may find pockets of places in Arvada that you can drive to that are better than your immediate neighborhood. Good luck!

Ralston Valley is doing a trick or treat street on Thurs Oct 30th at 5:30. Bring a can of food. Where are you located? I know Westwoods, 5 parks, & the Landings all have lots of kids and hence, lots of good trick or treating. Excel Academy is doing a Harvest Festival on Sat from 11-4.

If you know of anyone that lives in a different neighborhood that is maybe more kid friendly just pack them up and go there for trick or treating.
I go up and down two streets by my house with my two kids, only because I know most of those neighbors.
At the Broomfield Event Center on Saturday they have a real fun set up for trick or treating inside, with jumping castles and all and it is free. It is on Saturday, not Halloween though.

Check your local churches in the area. A lot of them will offer Halloween "fairs" for little or no cost. The ones that I have been to also do not try to push their beliefs on you or get you to attend church there. Plus it is most of the time indoors and away from the cold. Just a suggestion.
