My husband and I are taking our son (will be 9 months old when we go) to England in about six weeks to see his family. For anyone who has traveled did you take jar food (I was thinking of taking the Gerber plastic containers) with you or get it over there? Also do you switch them to the schedule over there or how do you do that? I dont want to get him too screwed up but I am not sure what would be the correct way of getting him to sleep when it is dark and eat about when he should.
Also any advice for taking a baby on a long flight?
Thanks you all so much! I am so glad to have this website to be able to talk to experienced moms!!!

What can I do next?

I think you might want to call the airport and find out what they are suggesting now. You not only have eating issues, you have security issues with transporting liquidy things!

Good luck and have fun!

I traveled with my daughter when she was about the same age. We didn't go out of the Country though. My husband and I tried to schedule our flights around her sleep schedule to make it easier on her. I don't know if you can do this or not because it's such a long flight. I gave my daughter a dose of Tylenol shortly before we took off (she doesn't take pain med often so it really knocks her out) but she slept each plane ride we were on. Taking off and landing are the hardest on the ears so make sure to have a bottle with you to let him suck on. We got very lucky and the flights that we were on were not full so we were able to carry my daughters car seat on the plane with us (she was still in her baby carrier at that time) and she had a seat to herself. Because it was her carrier, it was in a reclined position she it was easier for her to sleep. We face it toward the seat (backwards like you would in a car and we were set. Call you airline in advance and find out how full the plane is. If it's not full then they will let you bring on the car seat (without any charge). If they are full the you might want think about buying a seat for him. It will really make your travel much easier on you and your husband. In reagards to the food. I would find out if they carry the same brand and type of food over there and try to buy some once you get there (that's easier than trying to pack all of that food) but do call your airline and make sure you understand all of the rules on traveling with liquids. They are going to be more lenient with you because you are traveling with an infant but every airport is different and they will hassle you a little bit. So try to take the min amount of food that you will need with you on board the airline. I also bought my daughter a few new toys specifically for the trip and did not give them to her until we were on the plane that way she would be more fascinated with them. They are a lot of websites out there to look at as well. Just google "traveling with an infant".

Hope some of this helps! Good luck and have fun!!

I've never had to do this so don't have specifics, but I know NEW toys are wonderful entertainment. So pack the child's 'backback' or diaperbag with all new toys that they have not seen/played with before. So they play. When they get tired of that and start getting cranky, bring out another toy!

Wow, England sounds like a blast! My husband and I are stationed in Japan, and we travel back and forth quite a bit (to Kansas) We have never had any problems with baby food, formula, or any sort of snacks for our son. The only thing is fruit, if you take apples or something with you, I would suggest leaving anything left over on the plane. Dont worry about Jarred baby food, or formula. :) Good luck and have fun! Make sure you are assertive when it comes to getting what you need from the flight attendants. I have found when I fly internationally, I seem like more of an annoyance to them than anything. You are a paying customer, dont let them ignore you, moms with babies need all the help they can get!!
