Train Table - Chicago,IL

We would like to purchase a train table for my 3 year old. The challenge that I have is that we live downtown Chicago and are limited on space. The traditional sized train table would fit in certain areas of our place, but it is going to be a big piece of 'furniture' in our condo. Any suggestions? Is there a train table that breaks down and slides under a bed? I am not a huge fan of the mini train tables as you can't set the full track on them and that is really the whole point of us getting this for him. Thanks for any advice that you might have.

What can I do next?

I know someone who made one and put wheels on the bottom so it slid under their little ones bed. Maybe you can find a used one (not as pricey) and cut the legs off so it can fit under a bed or couch while not in use. We live in a 3 bedroom house and my son got a plastic one from his grandparents. The legs are not removable and it takes up his whole room! Although we love it, we really wish we could down size it!

I haven't seen any like what you describe...but getting one and cutting off the legs and adding wheels sounds promising!

~There is also the option of going with the Thomas 'take alongs'...do you know what I am talking about? They are smaller trains and come with small plastic tracks that usually fold up into a carrying case. You could invest of a couple, or all, of those...they take up hardly any space and are great for the little hands!

My boys have a train table, and yes it takes up a whole lot of space...but they love it and has been a source of entertainment in our house for YEARS!

My husband bought a piece of plywood and hardware pieces - round metal pieces that he screwed to the board and legs that screw into them (sorry, I have no idea what the hardware is called), and we keep it under the couch. The track is held on by foam double stick tape, but we have taken it off to add additional track and then just use new tape to reattach.

We have a train table that slides under the bed. It is from the thomas the train collection. It has scene on it and you can set up the track. It also has a drawer that you can put all the trains and track in. It has wheels and slides easily under the bed. I think it was around $200. It was a was a birthday gift to my son from his grandparents. I think they ordered it on line. Good luck

My dad made one where the legs folded like a card table. We pushed it right under the sofa! both my children played with it for years. Hope that gives you an idea. ;P

We live downtown in a townhouse. We had a train table and it swallowed a whole room. We eventually gave it to someone else. Maybe try to get a used one on Craigslist so you are not that vested. I have seen train rugs. I know.. not the same. My kids did like it for a while and they play at other people's houses but didn't play "that much" with ours. Maybe it was the location in our house. Anyways, I was happy to see it go and they really haven't missed it. Sorry.
