To Take Away or Not to Take Away?

My son is 10 1/2 months old.... For the past month or so I have been having him drink out of a sippy all day except his morning bottle and bedtime bottle and around his first birthday I will be taking away his bottle altogether... He also has a pacifier but doesn't really depend on it or even care about it he may use it sometimes but seriously he really doesn't care. He'll fall asleep with out it and if he does happen to fall asleep with it he will spit it out as soon as I set him in his crib....So my question to you ladies is since he doesn't really care about his pacifier she i get rid of it now so it doesn't become such an attachment later? Or should I wait until a couple weeks after he has had no bottles and then take away the pacifier? I just don't wanna take away all of his baby things at once.... That would make me feel bad.... But then again if he doesn't care should I?

What can I do next?

Ditch it now. Since he does the sippy cup all day he probably won't even notice the bottle and if he cares that little about the pacifier just "loose" it. Good luck!

Ditch the paci but give him some other item like a soft animal or blanket. My kids never liked the paci much but love their cuddly blankets. I bought cuddle fleece from the fabric store and sewed a blanket binding on it--very easy to make or replace. Beanie Babies are also a favorite around here. They are inexpensive, widely available and just the right size for a toddler to carry around.

Do it now! Before the bottle, definitely. God forbid he suddenly decides he HAS to have it once the bottle is gone - then you've got a real struggle on your hands.

Take the paci away now, the sooner the easier it is and it seems he's pretty much giving it up on his own.

take away the pacifier now, if he doesnt like it then you are golden to take it away. good luck with the no bottle transition. I had/have to have my sons off the bottle before their first birthday. they all 3 have cleft lip and palate and they do the palate repair at 1 year old. after the surgery they cant have bottles, binkies, sippys, nothing until they are totally healed. my oldest who is 2 1/2 now did awesome, he went cold turkey straight to a regular cup. He went to the regular cup at 11 months old. our twins are almost 9 months old and we'll have to do the same thing with them.

Get rid of it now! If he doesn't need it, don't use it.

Take it away. If he's not attached, why keep introducing it? Of course, you can leave it lying around and just not offer it to him. There were pacifiers available for both my children, and NEITHER of them used one. My 15 month old will pick it up every once in awhile (it's in a little bucket with little toys), and she bites in and throws it back in. :)

I think losing the paci now is a good idea. He might miss it a little, but by the end of the weekend, he'll be fine. Someone's suggestion to give him a blanket or other lovey instead is a good idea. The bottle will be the same way. Sounds like you have a great plan! Good luck!

If your son doesn't use the paci - take it away!!!

My daughter had a paci until she was 2...my 1st son - never used ANYTHING - he was a self-soother...my 2nd son? didn't get rid of his paci BY CHOICE until he was 6 years old - he STILL has an oral fixation....URGH!!! There have been times I would rather give him a paci back instead of him biting his nails or sucking on his fingers (not thumb - fingers!)

GOOD LUCK!!!
