Hi there!
My hubby has horrible TMJ and he's looking for an ENT/Dentist or some other doctor that is willing to treat it! He's been to so many drs that just want to 'pass the buck,' so to say and no one wants to deal with it.
Does anyone have experience with TMJ and with a dr who was willing to actually help them and give them options as to treat it? We'd love any and all recommendations! TIA!

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for all your recommendations! I am going to pass these along to my hubby and hopefully someone will be able to help!

ETA: Debbie we do see a chiro on a regular basis and dh has had his jaw adjusted but it's never really helped all that much. I don't think our chiro is A.R.T. certified and uses this weird device on his jaw a couple of times. DH is thinking that it might be a bit more complicated than just tmj, which is why he might have to go to a medical dr/dentist for some better treatment. He also already has a small mouthguard worn on the bottom teeth but it's no longer helping very much. :( Poor guy. Must really hurt b/c he's not a complainer.
Thanks again everyone. Keep any suggestions coming!

My chiro in Palatine on NW Hwy is treating mine. He uses ART technique which is explained on his website. I haven't had to wear my bite guard in months. his name is Dr. William Fager at Hands On Family Health at 37 S. NW Hwy at ###-###-####, their web is http://handsonfamilyhealth.com
My husband had a bite guard from his dentist in Des Plaines that just goes on his bottom front teeth. It's somewhat newer technology and he said he can definitely tell the difference in tension in his neck and jaw when he doesn't wear it. His dentist is Apple Dental -about 1/2 block south of NW Hwy and Lee -both are near the train if he doesn't want to drive out here and wants to try them.

Dr. Unti at Palatine Complete Dental specializes in TMJ. The entire staff at this dental office is top notch.

Good luck with whatever treatment you choose. I know from experience what a trial TMJ can be.

I do have TMJ not horribly but used to have the popping at clicking all the time. I wear a night guard at night $300-$400 a few years ago as well as go to a chiropractor who practices the activator method vs. manual so that it target my jaw. I have not had any popping or clicking for years and go on a monthly basis for an adjustments as I am prone to headaches as well. I prefer a natural route vs. surgery but then again would not say mine was the worst case scenario. Her name is Dr. Lynn Florian in Park City. North of the new Super Walmart in a small house on the east hand side. ###-###-####. If you have any questions, let me know.

Hi - I can't really help with local docs but, if you are willing to travel .. I had the reconstructive surgery 15 years ago and had the discs comepletely removed because they were beyond repair. It was the best thing I could have done! I did not even need pain killers for recovery because I had built up such a tolerance to the incredible pain I was in. The surgeon was John Johson in Columbia MO. He did a fabulous job. He hid all the incisions in my ears so, there are virtually no visable scars : ) Hope the info helps!

They thought my son had TMJ and These docs found he actually had a fistula, a tear in his ear drum causing the pain. Very thorough, good interaction with specialists. Took six months before they found answer...surgery done, problem gone.

Mine was diagnosed by an oral surgeon, though I was recommended by my dentist. That's been quite a while, and I don't remember their names (I've moved), but the dentist I see now understands it and one of the hygienists even has TMJ herself. This dentist has even made adjustments to my mouth piece for me. Her name is Dr. Janet Janis and she's located in Cary. I'm sure she would make sure your husband got the care he needed. If you need her number or more info, let me know and I'll give it to you.

Be aware, this is seldom covered by insurance. It wasn't too terribly expensive, though.

I don't know what your thoughts are on Chiropractors but they can do adjustments to help. My Chiro helps with mine and it seems to do the job. Hope this helps.
