Tips on Terrible 2'S

I think the much-dreaded "terrible two's" are begging to rear their ugly head. Please let me know if there are any books, websites, or tips you have that helped you through this time. The main issue is when my 22 month-old has crying or whining fits when he doesn't get his way. I just want to take a pro-active approach & try to avoid making his fits really insane. I was never around kids much growing up, or even as an adult so unfortunately I simply don't have much experience on the best way to handle crying fits (or similar). And he's not that bad at all--again, I just am wondering if there are things I might do proactively to make it thru the 2's. Thanks!!!

What can I do next?

I also love Love and Logic. We started using it years ago, and still use it (our oldest is 11). It fits our parenting style very well. I also agree that 3s are more difficult than 2s. That has been the toughest age for us so far. Of course we haven't reached the teenage years yet. ;-)

I agree with the Mom that suggested the "Love and Logic" books. This works.....not only with your kids, but with your boss, your husband, etc... It will really help you.

The original books I used were by Jim Fay and Foster Cline.

My favorite parenting tips: avoid anger, be consistent

A proactive approach is a good start for you.

I have a very strong willed 14 yr old daughter. She was a master whiner. She only threw a fit once in the grocery store and that never happened again.

For whining...When she whined I repeated this over and over.

"Wendy Whiner go away, come again another day"

She hated it but to this day, if i call her Wendy, she knows she is in her whine tone.

As for fits, I always told her that I would leave the store if she continued a fit. Yes, she chose to test me one day when I had a basket FULL of groceries. I warned her once. The next time, I rolled my basket to the manager and said...we are having a discipline issue and I must leave my groceries here and come back to get them when my daughter decides to act properly. He kept my groceries in the cooler. I took her home and I went back out later 9and left her with dad) to pick up my groceries.

Good luck. They grow up WAY TOO fast.

Hi D.,
Here are two of the resources I leaned heavily on in this time and still today:

1. "Happiest Toddler on the Block" (DVD) book is hard to truly grasp. The DVD is wonderful and will definitely cure the issue you are having, yet in a positive and constructive manner.
2. Love and Logic is wonderful. Lots of resources on their website....Gives you LOTS of tools and support.

both of these are great to start on now and will aid you for years to come.....

Just a heads up...terrible 3's are much worse than terrible 2's! Good Luck. Stand your ground and don't give in.
