It's just chapped. My 2 year old's thumb always looks pitiful because he gnaws on it more than he sucks it! You can use the Lansinoh breast ointment in the baby/nursing section at Target. It's completely safe to ingest and it's highly moisturizing.

any kind of lotion or cream should help. my son is a thumb sucker.. but he only sucks to sleep and then doesnt suck all night.. so I go in and put lotion on his thumb after he is asleep to help his thumb heal overnight..

it is basicly just chapped..from being wet too much..

Well my daughter is over 3 and still sucking her thumb pretty much all the time...and she will suck it all night long. We're trying to get her to only do it at night, but so far, it's not working! LOL! Anyway, to your question, I try and do vaseline. It absorbs pretty quickly and is very moisturizing!

Both my kids sucked their thumbs until about age 7. Occasionally they would have some chapped skin on the thumb. We found GoldBond cream during the day (and no sucking during the day) would help heal the skin. The dentist recommends that they stop sucking when the permanent teeth come in. Most kids will stop on their own, mine stopped daytime sucking by kindergarten, and still sucked to get themselves to sleep. I loved that they had this self soothing available at all times. The oldest one has braces now at 13 but her teeth are huge like mine. The youngest actually had little picket-fence teeth (lots of space) and now that she is 10 her teeth are almost perfect without braces. I have a feeling she will not need braces but she is still losing molars and eye teeth so we shall see how big those come in.

Hi there,

I had the same experience with my son. All he loves to do is suck his thumb. I've tried all these different thing but he just switches to this other thumb.

I then just thought I would give up; I figured he isn't hurting anyone and that was his security blanked. Then I asked his doctor about it and he told me all the bad things that can happen as far as his teeth are concerned & its stops your chin development!

He told me to look at adults with no chin form and that most likely means they sucked the them...

So I searched the internet and found these pair of gloves...he loved wearing them & after a couple of weeks he has stopped sucking his thumb!

The gloves also come with a free toy monkey for him!

The funny part is we just bought him another pair because he loves wearing them...he calls himself Sonic the Hedgehog...lol

I'd put some auqafor on it or some p-jelly. My DD's thumb used to get like that all the time until she quit sucking it at 24 months.
