We've recently started geocaching & the kids love it.
A friend told me we are not supposed to talk about it to people because it is a secret, as in don't tell the muggles.
Seemed silly to keep something so fun to ourselves, so we pretty much tell everyone our new hobby.
Just wondering should I not be?

A fun, free activity to do with kids that gets you outside :) can't beat it!
For those who asked, I'm more than happy to tell you. Its a high tech sort of treasure hunt. There is an app you can download to your smart phone & look for hidden boxes/tiny containers all over the place. Some just have a paper you sign saying you have been there but lots have little trinkets for the kids, you take something & then leave something. Mostly silly little toys, but the kids love getting something new & leaving something for the next person.
Geocaching.com has more info like the little trackables, but we love it

You are not supposed to be too obvious WHILE you are caching both in order to protect the cache from being vandalized and so you don't spoil the fun for other cachers that may be around.
But you can and should tell people all about it, so they can try this fantastic game by themselves.

I have never heard not to talk about it. If you don't talk about it, how will others know about it? How did so many people jump on the bandwagon?
How would anyone know about it if no one ever talked about it?
My brother's girlfriend told me about it and how fun it is. It's a blast, and the kids love it! They really love being on the hunt and finding the little containers hidden.
I think that rule is for letterboxing because it's supposed to be a "secret" society. I have not heard that for geocaching.
You're not supposed to give any hints or talk about your experience letterboxing because it could give away where the letterbox is. I have a friend who does letterboxing and she is very admant that she not give anything away to me about what she's found or where she's found it.

Friends have a geocaching thing on their car, so they certainly aren't secretive about it. They won't tell you where the item is, but they'll tell you there was one they found and how to get started.
You can tell the muggles about geocaching, just don't let them see you get the cache! I think it's more about making sure there are no muggles around while you find the cache so it can remain hidden. You just don't want the cache discovered by someone who might move it or destroy it. Have fun--we love geocaching--haven't had time to do it in awhile, but it's a ton of fun!
Seeing as there are community classes offered at our library, I'm thinking not!
It's probably a good idea to not talk about it while you're actually geocaching though. Enjoy your new, fun hobby!
