Another symbol question??? YES!!!! Another one!

Do they show up on everyone's computer or do older models or slower speeds of internet process them differently?

I know, I know. To anyone who is even remotely savvy, this is probably a silly question.

Computer 101 me!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I'm able to see yours. Does mine show up as a font or as boxes of "my computer can't read you"?

My favorite is the little umbrella...probably ONLY because of my location. ☂ Awe.

Grandma T., that's exactly what I'm talking about (you explained it perfectly!) I changed the font of my name and wonder if it shows up as letters or the scramble.

ETA- If there is no UNICODE "name" and it simply says 0x42 or something of the like, it will not transfer. It must have a UNICODE name. i.e. "fullwidth digit nine" which comes out like - 9

Go to "START".
Click on "All Programs"
Then to "Accessories"
Then "System Tools"
Then to "Character Map"

Find "MS Mincho" in the font listing.

Click on any character and then you can "select" and "copy" it for use in the "characters to copy:" box.

Also... There are so many fonts... And some of them will have different characters. ☮

Only boxes. What font are you using when you do this? And what symbol are you trying to get?

ETA: I don't see your umbrella. I just see "EPHIE D." in block letters

I just tried to get some more symbols out of my Word program in the wingdings section... but some of them wont transfer .... so I'm assuming it does have something to do with conflicts. I can copy the symbol but when I try to paste it it just comes out as a square or a letter or number. So, I'm scratchin my head.
I see your umbrella, does it not show on your end? J

They are just part of a font family, so different browsers and platforms will treat them differently. For Safari, IE (Internet Explorer), Firefox, etc. there are a list of "web friendly" fonts that are used. However, if someone codes a font to be "Tahoma" and your browser does not support it, it will likely default to a close match, another sans serif font like Arial. So it's very possible some of these characters/symbols wouldn't show up on some. But if it lets you cut and paste it in then it it probably a common font that is supported by this site. It's in how this site is created and coded.

Ephie, I do see you have a different font for your name, very cool! I might have to play around ;-)

Good question! I'd like to know too.

Later after Grandma T's response. I don't see your umbrella. There are two rectangular boxes that look a bit like domino pieces.

Grandma T's symbol is 2 musical notes after Grandma T.

I simply did a copy and went to my profile and paste from the original post that Grandma T posted yesterday.
