Hi Mamasource Girlfriends,

What can I do? What can I say? What would you do? Our neighbors have been burglarized twice. Yesterday my neighbor called to ask if I had noticed anything between 10am-12pm. Unfortunately, I had not.

This problem has increased in the 3 years we have lived here. We live in an area called Arcadia, and I believe the homes directly on the canal are targeted more frequently. There is a lot more gang graffiti on walls and businesses around as well.

I'm just at a loss...should I bring dinner? desert? It's such a loss for them. From what I understand the thieves stole an entire safe which was filled with their family documents and heirloom jewelery.

Thank you in advance.

What can I do next?

Yikes, that is tough! I hope they get an alarm, for about $30 per month, it would be worth it. In fact, you should consider it since it's litterally happening so close to your home! And if they file the theft thru their homeowners insurance, they will have a hard time getting a good rate for the next 3-5 years at least! I would just ask them if they need anything, if there is anything you can do. Maybe hang up neighborhood watch signs or something. Good luck! F. www.AgentLady.com

Hi there! As a neighbor who has been burglarized, a simple "I'm sorry" can do wonders. I told my neighbor that I had been burglarized, and asked if she had seen anything, and her only response was no, she had not seen anything. However, I would also let them know an alarm system can really pay off. We got one as soon as we had been burglarized, and we have had no problems since. If they cannot afford an alarm system, they may just consider getting some stickers from the alarm company to put in their windows--most often a burglar will not want to take their chances.

Please give them my best wishes.

Find out where you can buy safes that are bolted to the floor and bring them an ad - with dinner or dessert. They would appreciate it.

I think the best thing you can do is offer your help and support. It sounds like you and your neighbors need to take back your neighborhood. Contact the police department about setting up a Block Watch program. They say one of the best ways to deter a burglar is by having a dog or the impression of a dog. If nothing make it look like you have a dog with a water dish, a few "large dog" toys and a sign that says "Beware of Dog" The same thing for an alarm and lots of exterior lighting for night time.
I hope they catch these people soon. Tell your neighbor to check the pawn shops, craigslist and eBay to see if anyone is trying to sell her stuff.
Best if luck to you all.

I don't think it matters what you choose to do, just doing something for them is what they will appreciate. Sometimes I get so caught up in what I should do, that I don't do anything at all.

Good luck!

My heart goes out to your neighbors, and living so close, I know you must be feeling really vulnerable, too.
My husband and I had our house robbed a few years ago, and I cannot begin to tell you how devastating it is. Not only are you robbed of your belongings, but also of your sense of security, your sense of "home". In their place comes anger, lots and lots of anger. Your desire to reach out to them speaks volumes about what a good friend and neighbor you are, and that's just what they need right now. Bringing them a hot meal would be a lovely gesture, and I'm sure they would appreciate it. The others who suggested block watch, alarms, etc., are right on the money - for you, too. We felt really foolish installing an alarm system the day AFTER we were burglarized. Take back your neighborhood!
