Sugar Free Vitamins for Toddlers

seriously, is it this hard to find a vitamin not packed with sugar? Every jar I picked up listed sugar, corn syrup, fructose, or sucrose as the first ingredient...and i was at Trader Joes. What a disappointment.
Where can I find a good multivitamin that just has the vitamin and no 'stuff'. My son really only needs the Vitamin D - he eats everything else I put in front of him. And he only needs the Vitamin D because we were told to stop giving him whole milk at 2 (not because he is overweight or anything - I think it was just on their list is things to tell us at the 2 year old appt).
However, if I can't find a good vitamin, I think I will just start giving him the whole milk again. He is 50 percentile for weight, 70 for height so I don't think the extra fats would hurt!

Side note - why do the worst vitamins offenders have to be covered in his favorite cartoon characters??? come on!

So What Happened?

thanks for the advice, glad i am not the only obsessive label reader out there. I ended up finding a huge variety at a health food store, and got Barlean's Organic Oils, hope he likes it! In response to the comment about taking sugar of his diet - i am in no way trying to take all sugar out of his diet, and am aware of the sugar in fruits. In fact, that is the place I prefer he gets the majority of his sugars and the reason why I limit it in places where I find it unnecessary like for example, vitamins.

I went to the health food store to get their suggestions. My dr suggested whole milk until 4, so you may not even have a problem.

I am just curious how much sugar is in a children's vitamin. It couldn't be that much and seems like a pretty good trade off if he needs the vitamin D. I wouldn't worry about that little bit of sugar.

You should try Arbonne's kids vitamins. They come in a powder and you can either mix them with milk for a strawberry milk drink or water for a strawberry juice. Kids love them - and they have no sugar, yeast, starch, animal products or by-products. You can check them out at my website www.liveahealthylife.myarbonne.com.

Sugar is not the only thing to worry about in most vitamins.
Check out Shaklee's children's vitamins at http://www.shaklee.net/healthforlife. Shaklee is the number one seller of natural supplements and they have tons of published peer-reviewed research on their products.

We use the Might-A-Mins Spectrum Line which is made with Steevia. My kids love the flavor and they are the healthiest kids I know. These products are isotonic which simply means they are 90-95% absorbable compared to the pill form of vitamins which typically are about 30% absorbable. My whole family drinks our vitamins and we can actually FEEL the benefits. You can get them here : http://www.visionary-wellness.com. Hope this helps.

I would agree with the Shaklee suggestion. Their vitamins are all natural and are all pharmaceutical grade. If you are looking for a powder that you can mix into his oatmeal, applesauce, etc. I would recommend this which only has 3 grams of sugar: http://waterways.myshaklee.com/us/en/products.php?sku=20057

If you are looking for a chewable, then I would recommend this, which only has 1 gram of sugar: http://waterways.myshaklee.com/us/en/products.php?sku=20002

Neither of them have any artificial sweeteners or preservatives.

I hope this is helpful!

OK, so first of all, all milk has vitamin D, not just whole milk. But, you can get Vitamin D drops if he doesn't need the multivitamin (thought a multivitamin/multimineral never hurts. Try places like Whole Foods or a natural pharmacy see what they have. You might find other drops that aren't sugar-laden chewables.

I'm so happy you have brought this to the attention of other mothers. So many of the OTC vitamins are chockful of things to counteract the reason for vitamins. Please check out my web at livingwithsolutions.com
Read the labels and know your company. Shaklee is the #1 natural nutrition company in the country. If you are serious about the best for your children I urge you to do the research. Would love to talk more. Good Luck

Melaleuca makes an awesome vitamin for kids.........you might check them out.........

With that said, your son is going to have to have some sugar......even natural fruit has sugar in it.........so what you need to worry about more, is taking the sugar out of his diet more than his vitamins. Not that I would not check the vitamins and get the ones with less, but you can't not give him vitamins.

Good Luck and take care............oh, and the answer to the worst vitamins being his favorite character.........it always works that way...........I think it's a parental curse!!!

Just like cereal, the worst of everything is designed to attract your kid's attention with cartoons.

Be careful of the sucralose in many of the vitamins as well. We use Twin Labs Dr. Green's Multi and also the Juice Plus gummies, which now have WAY less sugar and Nordic Naturals fish oil. My kids LOVE the taste of all of them.

Nordic Natural Children's DHA are 3rd party tested, no PCBs, lead or mercury and come from Norway where they actually have fish oil standards, unlike the US.

I work with a health company to education people on the connection between nutrition and disease, why we need vitamins, and how to choose a supplement. I am technically in sales but my main goal is to get the word out to moms about about current research out there.

It sounds like you have already found a vitamin, but if you are still looking for something else (vit D, or even something for you), I would suggest looking at third party sources; i.e. studies not done by the company that makes the product. The only source out now that rates supplements is call The Comparative Guide to Nurtional Supplements by NutriSearch. There is a version specifically for children's supplements. Believe it or not, the Physican's Desk Reference (PDR) that most docs have in their offices does contain some supplements.

I hope this helps. And please feel free to contact me without the fear of being sold to. Again, I am here to help education and help point people in the right directions to find what they are searching for. All the best!
