Suddenly Waking During the Night

I have a one year old. He has been sleeping through the night since he was a few months old. Suddenly, in the last week or so, he has started waking during the night and will not go back to sleep. He has been on Omnicef for an ear infection (his first infection). Could the medicine be causing this?

Thanks for any suggestions.

I suppose it's possible that the medicine could be causing him to wake. More than likely, though, it's either 1) the ear infection is not getting better and is causing him pain or 2) he is on the verge of a major milestone (perhaps walking?). Many times, when babies are about to go cover a milestone, their sleeping suffers. I remember reading in Parents magazine quite awhile back that their little brains are so active and anticipating this new milestone, that they wake easily, even though they were previously good sleepers. Once the milestone was hit, they typically went back to their good sleeping routines.

Yes - it is most likely the ear infection or the antibiotic - My daughter has had many ear infections and she does the same thing.

I agree with the others that it is probably just the ear infection, but if it continues after the infection clears it could be a growth spurt or an age appropriate milestone. Just before my son hits either of these 2 factors, his sleep pattern changes. Either way, if it's not the infection, then the sleep disruption is probably a good sign!

Good Luck!

J.,
My kids have been on omnicef before, and I have not had similar symptoms, most likely, the problem is actually the ear infection. Do you give him motrin or anything before bed. In my experience you can give a little extra attention right now, with out it ruining him. Sometimes a sippy cup (or bottle) to suck on will help them "open up their ears" (for lack of a better phrase). Be sure to go in for your follow up, as sometimes the ear infection doesnt clear up with the first antibiotic given. Also, a warm compress has helped to allieviate the discomfort. Good luck, and God bless you and your husband for your support of our freedoms!!!!

Please listen to me. We almost lost my daughter last year on the same path you may be headed down. When she was 1 year old, she began to get ear infections. The doctor kept prescribing antibiotics, Omnicef quite often. She developed a resistance to them and wound up in Children's Hospital fighting for her life with a type of pneumonia called an MRSA which is resistant to antobiotics. MOST ear infection cannot be helped with antibiotics. Hence you create a "super bug". Many people in this area have DIED from this, including the wife of a friend of mine who was 7 months pregnant. My daughter had surgery to save her life by draining the lung (which she almost lost). She had been to her pediatrician 3 times the week prior to this. Thank goodness we stopped listening to him and took her to the hospital. Please do your research and your homework and NEVER trust your pediatrician over your own intuition.

Your son wakes up because an ear infection is more painful while laying down. He may be more comfortable sleeping slightly propped up or in a bouncy seat. The homeopathic ear drops you get at Whole Foods Market have garlic oil and willow in them and are very soothing.

Its probably the ear infection and not the meds. I would not worry unless his infections (or other ear, nose or throat) are reoccuring. If he wakes up often he could have sleep apnea caused by the continual infections. If he snores then this could be a clue to the sleep apnea.

You did say its his first, but just wanted to give you a little heads up. I did not know about sleep apnea. My son just had is Adenoids and Tonsils removed by an ENT Dr, so all this is fresh on my mind and not ment to scare you.

Otherwise, I wouldn't worry about it untill the infection goes away.

It could be a stage, but I can tell you from my own personal experience that Omnicef really upsets my stomach. I don't have problems with any other antibiotics. Maybe it is rough on his tummy?

You might try advil at bed time. If it's not the ears, those pesky 1-yr molars could be givng him a hard time.
