Ladies:

Our first is 4.5 months old and looks like he may start crawling soon. In preparation, we thought to stowe some stuff away and begin the babyproofing process. Any ideas for which storage boxes/ baskets fit the IKEA Lack bookshelf well? http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/00045560

We've got a red one to which we've fitted legs and are using as a TV bench for our flatscreen. Currently it holds many of our favorite paperbacks. If our little boy takes after his mother, those books don't stand a chance. Apparently, when I was little, I liked to gnaw on books.

I know that there must be some IKEA boffins out there.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Ugh...the problem with LACK is that there are few options once you turn it on its side. I have one that I've turned into a bench but just happened to have some baskets that I had bought years before at Michael's that fit perfectly.

Some stores have a guide that matches baskets and bins to the shelving units, but I have had a hard time finding a good fit.

You could try the paper board boxes from KASSETT or NOSTALGISK lines. Or SAMLA plastic bins.

There are some great IKEA tv centers and bookshelves that have the lower portions covered with a door (sliding or fold out). If you have baskets... they can be easily pulled out and played with or have them fall on baby.

Ikea had a toy box size table or shelf that has large plastic tubs that slide into it. I was thinking to get it to replace the toybox we have now. It was about $70 a few weeks ago. I also got a good storage unit from Target with cube shaped spaces for bins. There are several sizes from 2 cubes up to 9. It was also inexpensive and comes in a few colors for the shelf and many colors for the bins. The bins are not that sturdy since they are fabric and cardboard but they are not expensive either ($5 on sale up to maybe $11 for the animal face ones). My kids love it and I love stashing the toys out of sight since the living room is also the "playroom."
