Hi! My daughter will be turning 10 in a couple of weeks (yes, just days before Christmas). I want to do something special to recognize this milestone and wondered if anyone had any great ideas? I was thinking of writing her a letter to her about how much she means to us and how much she has grown in the last 10 years (I can't believe she will be 10!!) but that's as far as I've gotten.

We have always made a point to celebrate her birthday on the actual day (since it is so close to Christmas) so the usual bake a cake, go out to eat, do something special is figured out. We do usually have a birthday party for her to invite friends at her half birthday.

I just want something extra special from us--her mom, dad and brother--because she's turning 10.

TIA for your help!

What can I do next?

Is this something you want to do, or you want your family to do? Because my first thought was if it's you wanting to recognize this, (in addition to whatever family day activities), how about asking her to help you plan a day trip/day of fun activities for the 2 of you. Could be primping/nails done/girly stuff, could be taking her ice skating just the 2 of you & lunch after, could be renting her fav movie and make sundaes together to eat during the movie, etc. At at the end, when you go in to say goodnight, give her the letter to read. (I love the letter idea!!!!! :) As part of the day, during one of the meals, you could just let her know how proud of the person she is turning into and how she's growing (keep most of the it in the letter, so as not to spoil it)--hearing it out loud I think is just as important as having it written down.

Maybe you could let her do something extra special she has been wanting to do. Go to a movie with her friends, or get her ears pierced.

Just do something different to mark the milestone.
A party would be good but you can wait until after the holidays to have it and invite her friends over. Just tell her now. Nothing extravagant just fun.
- Or you could take her and 2 friends out to lunch or a movie or for pedicures.
- For gifts: a silver bracelet w/a special charm would be great.
- Or a special shopping trip to the mall to shop at Aerpostle (sp?) or Wet Seal getting things on sale.
- Glamour shots at the mall....cute but expensive.

When my daughter turned 10, we gave her a silver claddagh ring with her birthstone, a garnet, in the heart. This is important to us culturally, as my husband's family is from Ireland. We've had to have it sized from time to time as she grows but she still wears it to this day, though the heart points to her instead of outward, as she has a steady boyfriend now (she's nearly 21!) Something beautiful that is also important to your family culturally will make a large impact. Barring that, birthstone rings are always a lovely idea, and could be her first piece of real (gold or silver rather than plated) jewelry.

Love the charm bracelet idea! She will be coming in to so many special years ahead and it will be so nice to mark them with a special charm.

You could get her a charm bracelet and get a "10" charm on it from James Avery. Then you can add to it as she gets older and hits more milestones. I also like the letter idea. I write them to my kids sometimes and seal them. They'll be able to open them when they graduate from high school. I'm curious to see what they say! Some were written 10 years ago when I was pregnant with #1.

My son's birthday is the 21st so I know where you're at! I think a charm bracelet would be lovely for a girl. 10 seems like just the right age- old enough to appreciate and take good care of it and also kids that age love to 'collect' things. Get her a birthday charm and then you can always add for other special events, vacations, milestones, etc.

I still have the charm bracelet my grandparents started for me when I was about that age- and one that was my MOTHER'S when she was a girl. You might start a tradition!
