Shivering/trembling

We have an eight month old shitzu/terrier who just started trembling today for no apparent reason. It went on for over an hour. I held her to see if someting had scared her and I covered her with a blanket. I thought maybe she was chilled, but nothing helped. I took her to the vet and the vet could find nothing wrong. Has anyone else experienced this? Is just something small dogs do?

What can I do next?

Is she favoring any part of her body? My dog (Boston Terrier) did this a few months ago. I also noticed he was favoring one of his legs when he walked. When I took him to the vet, he said it was probably just a pulled muscle and that it would heal on its own.

I hope she feels better!

My Chihuahua does this all the time, when she is excited or nervous or sometimes for no reason at all. As long as the vet says she's OK...I would not worry about. My dog is 11 years old and has done it all her life.

I believe it is the breed. My Aunt had one that was a retired show dog. The dog had to retire due to nerves. He would tremble just as you have described. Unfortuntly the trembling would sometimes put his back out of wack.

I tend to agree with the other posters that it is probably seizures. Does your dog get really glassy eyed? Does your dog have a lot of hair? Maybe, he/she is cold. Always, a good idea to have your dog checked when something new is going on. It could even be a blockage.

Let us know how your dog is doing.

If it continues I would of course have it checked again, but sounds like there was some fear involved. Sometimes there are things that we don't see or hear. I know dogs are better at hearing than humans. Perhaps it heard something for awhile outside, like a siren. Or a neighbor with one of those weird websites that only animals can hear. I know sounds weird but my son was telling me about something like that one day.

My mom has an older shitzu that regularly has seizures. It involves a lot of shaking and some yalping. The vet has said that it's just something he has not to worry. Oddly he usually seems recharged afterwards.

I have not had a shitzu or a terrier, but our golden retriever used to do that, and it was diagnosed as seizures. It's good that you took her to the vet. I'm not sure our golden was ever even on meds for it. We just had to reassure him and be with him until it was over. It was nothing fatal or a condition that affected him otherwise. I hope this info. helps!

My girlfriend told me her puppy 6-8mos. did that when she was teething and hid behind furniture...She said to give your puppy ice cubes. Good luck.
