She's So Delayed...

I'm sitting here typing this while my daughter is napping. She'll be 15 months old in a week. She is very delayed when it comes to her gross motor skills. She can't even crawl yet and she just started putting a little weight on her legs this month. Everything else about her development is perfectly on time. I get so upset at times thinking about all of this. We're doing everything we can to help her - physical and occupational therapy... we've been to all of the right doctors and we've had all of the tests done. No one can explain why she's so delayed. The only thing they say is that she has hypotonia (muscle weakness). Other than this, she is a bright eyed, intelligent, happy baby.

Does anyone else know of a baby who was this delayed? I'm just looking for a happy ending.

Thanks in advance from a worried first time Mommy.

What can I do next?

Hi C.. ((hugs))
I have a son with autism and also has hypotonia. OT really helped him. Since she is only 15 months, is she also getting early intervention?
She' should be able to get it.
She'll catch up, it's a matter of time.
My son was in OT for a yr before testing out. He's still clumsy but we put him in swim and gymnatics to help. She is so young, but getting her into programs later on will help too.

Best of Luck

Hi -

My godson went throught all the same things you mentioned. He had weak muscle tone and the early intervention/therapy really helped. It took some time but he started walking around 18-20 months. Now he is five and doing everything a five year old should, incld karate and tee ball! He runs really fast! So hang in there and keep doing what you are doing, I'm sure she will do great!

Hi. We adopted our daughter through foster care. When she came to us at 18 months she was the same. She wasnt walking and could barely sit by herself. She was also said to have hypotonia. She was walking by age 2 and now at 10 you would never know she had problems. When she did start to walk we had molds made of her feet at Childrens and they made her inserts for her shoes to help her with support. She will be fine. Keep up the therapy. I know sometimes you feel like it might not be helping but in the end it pays off.

Hi C.,

I understand what you are going through. My daughter did not walk until about 20 months. Now she is 4, she has done two years of dance, takes karate, swimming and played t-ball this year. She is VERY active and runs around our yard all the time.

I know it is frustrating, but she will come around. All of a sudden the lightbulb will got on, and then she will be running.

Hi.... When i had my daughter i was worried all the time cause she was delayed but today at four she's one top of everything . It sounds like ur doing everything u can right now . My grandmother(5 kids) told me that my daughter will crawl and walk when she'd ready and she did. Try to not worry but i know it's hard but everything will work out and before u know it u will be running after her . good luck and relax.

Hi...my daughter was delayed also. She did crawl and did this weird knee walking thing until she was 15 months old. She is considered low-tone but she is now 3 and she runs, jumps, climbs and dances :)

I also have a friend whose son is 13 months old and was seriously delayed up until this month. He all the sudden decided he wanted to crawl, pull up and cruise using furniture.

It sounds like you are doing everything you should be doing. I remember crying all the time over my daughter's delays but they do build that strength up. My daughter is still a little klutzy and very cautious but growing out of it. I'm sure you little girl will do the same.

Hi C.
I'm not a doctor, but my oldest son didn't crawl or walk until he was 18 months old. He just had no desire to try. Everyone thought something was wrong with him. We decided to get him a little fire engine with wheels and he would scoot around the house or wherever we went on this fire engine. He scooted around on this thing for months. Friends and family were worried, but finally when he was almost 19 months old he got off his fire engine and started walking. He's 10 years old now and fine, he was just a cautious baby and didn't want to start walking until he was ready. Maybe your child just isn't ready yet. Give it some more time not all babies walk early. I hope this helps.

This sounds so much like a little girl I know. I'm not close friends with her mother but she was delayed just like your child. She scooted on her bottom till she was almost 2. She had some muscle problem that sounds very similar to what you are discribing. She had to wear braces on her legs for a few months, but now she is a perfectly fine 2 and a half year old. So there is some light at the end of your tunnel.
