Septic Tank/Aeration System

We have a septic tank and aeration system for our house. We got the annual contract with the aeration company last week and it's $185/year to renew. All this covers is them coming out 1x a year to check a screen and drop in some tablets. There was some other mumbo jumbo but basically boiled down to them saying if something breaks, that money does not cover it. It does not cover labor or parts. Just seems like an awful lot of money to pay each year since we'd have to pay out of pocket additionally if something did break! Any of you have a septic tank/aeration system and NOT have a contract? What do you do to keep it clean?

Thanks!

What can I do next?

I've been on septic my entire life, and only had 2 problems - once it had to be pumped when my dad thought it was a good idea to stir it (gross!!!), and right after we moved into our first house and the concrete connection broke ($2000 in damage!). All you have to do is drop the tablets/rid-x in the toilet once/month. A septic tank only needs to be pumped/serviced if there is a problem. Many people have it pumped regularly, but it's not necessary. Where I grew up, everyone had septic and well water, and nobody pumped their septic tanks. You just don't need to. Unless you're required by law, I'd let the contract expire and treat the system your self! Best of luck!

In Texas we are required by law to have a contract with someone. We pay around $150 for a year and they are required to come out 3X a year to check it. The company we have been with have been really good. They are faithful on coming out to check it when they are scheduled to and gives us a report each time. We also have to get it pumped every two years at our own cost which is around $360. We are supposed to keep these "chlorine type" tablets (not the same as you would put in a pool). When you get it pumped, be sure that they pump all tanks. We have a total of 3 tanks underground. Only one had what you call a riser that comes out of the ground so it looks as if we only have just one tank. A lot of companies who are less than honest will just pump that one and not say or do anything about the others that might be there. That's what happened here I believe. We've been in our house since 2006 but the house has been here since 2002. Due to some water, air and electrical lines going over the two additional tanks, it was obvious that those two have never been pumped. If you don't pump the tanks in the timely manner you run the risk of burning up the pump which will result in expensive repairs. Get with your aeration company to see what they suggest on what you should do to keep it clean. Remember, that if you have multiple water functions going on at the same time, like shower, dishwasher, washing machine that it will cause your pump to work harder. So try to space them out if you can. If you have a large number of people living in your house, it is recommended to have your tanks pumped more frequently. Also, do not pour bleach, grease or any harsh chemicals into your drains. Also you aren't supposed to have a garbage disposal. And it's not a good idea to flush sanitary napkins either. I've been learning all about it as I've been here since this is my first time having one.

We have a septic tank. We get it pumped about every 2 years. We don't have a contract and don't get it "checked" otherwise. You can call around and see what the going rate in your area is for this service. Otherwise YOU can rinse the screen and drop in some tablets.

My mom has a septic system. She gets it cleaned out every couple of years and puts the stuff in the toilet. No contract. BUT a septic system is VERY expensive to repair/replace. But if the $185 isn't covering any future work, what good is it?

I live in Texas and have never heard of any law that requires us to have a contract. Everyone around us has septic systems, and no one has a contract. We've had a septic system for 11 years and have never had a contract. Our toilets start flushing slowly about every 4 or 5 years, and then we have our septic tanks pumped.
