Hi Moms,

My 5 year old son has just been diagnosed with Sensory Integration Disorder. I was looking to connect with other people who are familar with this. My son is a sensory seeker, so he is always on the move. He is seeing an OT. I am a very pro-active person and would like to discuss with others about living with this kind of disorder.

Thanks!!

Hi M.
My son Nathan who is 5.. has lots of issues.. sensory issues are huge, as well as communication, etc.
We are having him evaluated by Easter Seals on April 1st for an official diagnosis.. which we are pretty confident will be on the Autism or PDD spectrums or a Sensory disorder.
Since april 08.. he has had sleep issues.
And in the last 5 wks.. has hit a wall.. digressing in so many areas.
I would love to talk to you more.

Hi M.,
My son hasnt been diagnosed yet but that is what is suspect and everyone at his early intervention playgroup has suggested the book The out of sync child we ordered it from barnes and noble but haven't gotten yet but even one lady that has a child there is a spec. ed teacher and she suggested it to so I figured it was worth a try. My son is always seeking too he has to be wrapped up in so many blankets in order to fall asleep we are looking into getting a weighted blanket and he also always on the go go go.
Edited: Hi M., so I got my book and was reading some of it and they recommend karate and also a gluten free casien free diet can help my little guy is already on it because of food allergies. I have found that w/ the warm weather if he is outside all day it makes our nights much better.

My son was diagnosed with this at 5 as well and now is 10. He is sensory seeking and very active in sports. It is important that the schools that he will go to know this and make sure his class room has a "sensory diet" as part of the day. This is very common and not an unusual request. In preschool my son's teacher taught him letters and numbers while he was walking on a low balance beam. When he was younger he had a "stuffie" that had buckwheat in it when he sat in circle. The pressure from that helped him sit still. Feel free to e-mail me if you have any other questions.

My son has many issues along the same line as well as ADHD. The best thing I have found is Karate. He went years without any medication at all becuase he was doing karate. Go to a local dojo and see what they say. The one my son is in now is full of children in the like. Not to mention the owner and Sensie has something along those lines too. It is GREAT for any child! I can't wait until I can get my daughter into it.

I have a friend whose child has this - his senses run on "high" all the time and it affects so many aspects of his life. He was very sad and depressed, having problems in school & socially. He has done wonderfully on a nutritional supplement called Now for Kids - good nutrition has restored the balance in his life. This is not something that the mom could do thru his regular diet. They are thrilled with the results. I know she would be happy to talk to you.

Hi M.,
My 13 y.o. has SID along with other disorders. Don't be discouraged. There is a great book out there called "The Out of Sync Child"; OTA in Watertown, was a true blessing for us as we pinoeered through Sensory Intergration Dysfynction /Disorder. It was amazing, how after my son jumped on a trampoline he could organize his thoughts to put a sentence together better. Let me know any questions you might have.

My son has SID along with other developmental issues. I can tell you that there is lots out there to help him organize himself. Since he is in school you should connect with the teachers and make sure that they are giving him what he needs at school in order to succeed. Is he on an IEP or a 504 plan? You should also check out your local special ed parent advisory council. It's a great way to connect with other parents in your area. I am involved with the Framingham chapter and our web site has lots of local information. You can go to www.F-SEPAC.org and there may be a support group you can find as well. Good luck.
