Seeking Info on Making Blind Cords Safe

I work in the window treatment industry, depending on the type of blind that you have depends on how you fix them. If you have a horizontal product you need to put little "donut" piece on each pull cord at the top by the lock because a lot of kids take the string that go through the hole in slat and pull that out and put their head through that part and strangle themselves, but you also want to get cord cleats to wrap the actua cord around.
get cord cleats if you have cell shades also. If you have verticals get the cord tension pulley to mount to the wall that the cord goes through continiously. If you call 3 Day Blinds they have ahy type of retro kit to make your window coverings kid safe. They will send some out to you or go in and they will show you how to fit them. It's real easy. I bought a bunch of those 3M hooks that can be removed (at a much later date!) and I stuck those way high up on the sides of the window. Then, I gather the cord in "loops" and hang the "loops" from the hook. That worked like a champ!

If you go to Target or Babies R Us they have cord winders there. I have a 2 years old and a one year old and both of them are very active, but they can't reach the little "balls" by the blinds, si they just stopped messing with them.

I use paper clips or plastic clothes pins to keep my blind strings up. My son doesn't mess with them anymore and he's hyperactive. So, maybe this will work for you. If you have low windows like I do fold strings as far to the top as you can, but leave a little room so you can pull the string.

They sell cordless blinds that are inexpensive. I have no idea how they go up and down (magic?) but I LOVE mine. They were about $15 each at JC Penney, and they look like a normal cellular blinds except no cords visible at all. (they aren't really cordless, but the cords aren't very obvious, and run inside the blinds - so if you really wanted to, you might be able to pull a loop out of the inside, but it's not like a regular blind.)

I have my doubts that any blinds with cords can be safe for a determined kid, and when my daredevil second son was about that age I caught him pulling the cords through the back of our roman shades - not the part that hangs down, of course you can tie those out of the way, but the loop that forms if you just pull on the cord from the back. I took down every single blind that had a cord that night. The kids' room has always had a shade, and now we have curtains in the living room. Everywhere else, cordless blinds.

My blinds came with the two pieces that you screw into the wall or trim and then you wind them around them. I suppose you can find two hooks of some sort and place them up high and tie them around them. I would try to go to any hardware store or somewhere like Lowes or Home Depot and ask the drapery/blind people and see what they suggest. Best of luck.
