You need to take your children into the Urgent Care or doctor's office and have them do a blood work up. Do NOT leave until it is done.

Is does NOT sound like a staph infection - it sounds like impetigo.
I would also demand that the doctor do a culture of the scabs and anything that might be oozing out of it.

call the docotor. staph infections are serious and come back often once you get them. i wouldnt want her having eye surgery if she had mrsa

It sounds like it could be MRSA (aka staph infection, they are very difficult to keep from reoccurring) or impetigo. Either way, she needs to see the doctor. You'll need to reschedule the eye surgery until this is sorted out and treated.

Toss your combs, never use the same ones or brushes used on them on anyone else, they each need their own. Wash everything down in bleach, wash clothing, bedding and towels separately from the rest of the family's. Whatever they had/have, she was reinfected.

The best thing you can do to prevent the spread of the infection, and to keep you and your family from getting it, is to practice excellent hygiene. Keep your hands washed, gloves on when treating the wound, do not share personal items, such as soaps, towels, or clothing. If someone does get it, make sure to keep the wound covered. MRSA is extremely contagious.

Lastly, if it is indeed MRSA on their scalps be very, very conscientious about treating it. My brother had it a few years ago on the back of his head, he was hospitalized 8 or 9 days. The doctors were extremely concerned about it as the nature of MRSA is to burrow downward, they were afraid it would go to his brain.

Hmmm, yes I agree the doctor should have done blood work initially. My son had a staph infection once and his doctor treated it but sent for blood work anyway, just to be sure. It wasn't MRSA with my son and did go away after the antibiotics.

I would probably call the doctor's office right this second and see if you can get an on call doctor to help you. If not go to the ER with both of them, and go ahead and start planning for the notion that the eye surgery will be cancelled, it's a very distinct possibility.

ETA..oh yes, I just saw that some others said it could be impetigo, I hadn't thought of that. We've had that only once I think and it's icky. Either way figure it out fast! Good luck!

Take the kids both back to the dr and request the blood test. Don't wait for the doctor to do it... ASK for it. I would reschedule the eye surgery to make sure she's 100% healthy for the surgery.

A doctor needs to check these sores out in regards to treatment. I would re-schedule her eye surgery. You do not want her having elective surgery with any infection.

I would get it taken care of quickly, as yes, it could interfere with the surgery...

I hope by "let it go" you don't mean you stopped giving the antibiotics. Staph can be exceedingly hard to clear out, and stopping treatment before it's gone can create more-resistant bacteria that require even heavier antibiotic treatment.

Please get your kids back to the doctor quickly. This could indeed interfere with an upcoming surgery, and you need to know sooner rather than later. I'd insist on bloodwork to confirm the type of infection, since it's come back.

I would wait until everything is completely healed before having the eye surgery-and I would call both doctors right away to apprise them of the situation-take care-all the best!

You need to get her down to the pre-surgery folks and discuss this issue. Get the bloodwork done (give her plenty of water the night before and the next morning to hydrate her so that they can find a vein.)

You need to treat both children for this (get bloodwork done by the doctor for your son too.) If I were you, I would scrub down and disinfect your entire house. Wash all bedding in hot water and put something in the washer to disinfect it.

I wouldn't worry so much about interfering with the surgery - just put off the surgery - that's not too hard. You need to make sure that this infection won't cause her tremendous and scary problems after the surgery. You can have the surgery after she is no longer at risk.

Just wanted to chime in that impetigo is usually a staph infection (can also be caused by strep, but mostly staphylococcus aureus) and it does leave those typical yellow scabs.
Your doctor should test for MRSA, which is simply a resistant variant of staph and needs to be treated with different antibiotics. This test can be done with a simple swab of the sore and does not require a blood draw.
Impetigo was classically treated with gentian violet, which is messy, but has little side effects and may be helpful to add if you are having difficulty controlling the infection.
Staph/ impetigo is also highly contagious! You must sanitize EVERYTHING that has touched your kids sores: bed linens and towels should be changed daily and washed on hot with some bleach, combs and brushes should be disinfected. Tell your children to wash their hands frequently and avoid touching their scabs. It is not unlikely that your DD has been re-infected from some source in your home that didn't get properly sanitized, like a comb, hair clip, hat or even a stuffed animal.

I believe that a responsible surgeon would not perform any kind of non-emergency surgery on a patient with an active staph infection - that is just a recipe for post-surgical complications.

Staph infections are really hard to get rid of. This new batch needs to be seen by the doctor. She should NOT have surgery on Friday if there is any question that she has any illness. They will do blood work for that at least by Wed. and any infection would show up in her blood count.
