I am looking for an affordable lawyer who can help me get full custody and name change for my child. His father left us 5 years ago and only visit his son about three times within that year of leaving. The last thing I heard about him was he had moved in with another girl and they had a little boy. We never heard from him again. My son uses my last name for sports and special events but I would really love it if I can legally use it like at school and for his medical records. I would also love to have full custody of my son so we can do so many things without trying to find his father and get permission such as for traveling. I could be wrong but not sure you need a lawyer for this; call family court downtown and someone can walk you through the process.
If he hasn't been around recently I doubt very seriously that he will fight you in court. If you get a lawyer it will be about 3000 for a retainer if you do it on your own it could be cheaper.

My sister did this on her own. She went downtown to the courts and filed the papers on her own. If you think he'll give you hell about it and will fight it it's up to you if you want a lawyer. Try filing the papers on your own to save money, but if you think he'll fight then consider a lawyer. Lots of luck.

I realize their fees are based on income but they are still hardly affordable for me. Just wanted to let you know that their fees do add up and they dont even guarantee that they help you fill out the papers correctly.
