Seeking Any Knowledge on Seizures!

I am a single mother of three girls who unfortunately had to witness this past Friday their mother having a seizure. This is the second one I have had now, and the doctor's can't find anything wrong with me. The EEG's the MRI, catscan, bloodwork, echocardiogram, everything looks great they tell me. They have started me on some medication to hopefully prevent more from happening. I was just wondering if anyone else has gone through this or knows of someone else who has. I guess I am trying to figure out all of the different types of seizures and what causes them.

What can I do next?

First, (( hugs )) to you...this is difficult to go through. My husband has seizures also.
The fact they've done all those tests and they are coming back negative may actually be a good sign - that means there's nothing scary like a tumor causing them. My hubby was at least 17 or so before he started having them out of the blue, no reason for them that doctors have found.
Finding the right medication to control them can take some time because different things work for different people. He's on his third combo and has finally found one that seems to not only stop the grand-mal seizures (convlusions) but also the petit-mal (those ones are hard to explain without going to great length).
For great information on the different types of seizures and the different treatments, check out www.epilepsyfoundation.org.

Finding a real cause is rare, but there are some things I have learned that are VERY important: take those meds on time, eat regularly, and most definitely get enough sleep every night. My husband is very well controlled on his seizures, but if he gets almost no sleep then misses a dose, he'll have clusters of petit mal seizures for a day or two that wear him out.

Feel free to message me, and good luck with this.

P.S. - I also have three girls, aged 9, 6 and 3! :-)

I have a really good friend who starting having seizures randomly recently also. She is only 24, but still had never had one before and then started having them. They, too, could find nothing out of the ordinary with her. So, she takes her medicines religiously, had to give up drinking completely because med's and drinking don't mix at all, and hasn't had one since she really started on her meds. She said that she has never felt better. She didn't even know she felt bad until she started her meds and now she feels wonderful. She had her second seizure in front of a class of special education students that she teaches!!!! :( Poor kids. Best wishes!

They sleep deprive you and do the flashy light thing in your face. My doctor is really good with people who have seizures his name is Hosi Padamadan and he is located on Bethel rd. The practice is OSU family practice at Bethel rd. my email is ____@____.com if u would like any more info. hope this helps

Hi Leanna,

My husband suffers from seizures and just as was mentioned before, nothing was ever found wrong with him. He has gone to many doctors in the past and been through test after test. We've come to the conclusion that SLEEPING, EATING RIGHT, and MEDICATION is the only way to control his seizures. My husband has a very messed up schedule and keeping him on track is hard! (I call it reminding and he calls it nagging). Fortunately, I had never witnessed him having one, that was up until we had our son. The day after our baby was born, mind you he hadn't slept or eaten in two days, he had a seizure right there in front of me (that too I was recovering from a C-section!). He's fine now, but it still scares me.

You have 3 precious little ones who make you their world. Make sure to get enough sleep at night, eat regular meals, take rest when you can, and limit life's stresses! Take care!

Hi, L.--Not to scare you, but I know someone who recently had a couple of seizures and then started getting numbness in her hands and feet and a burning sensation all over her body--especially in her chest. The numbness turned into kind of a temporary paralysis. She was hospitalized several timesand at one point told that she either had MS or she was crazy (nice bedside manner). She has a 3-year-old and a 1-year-old so that was really hard being away from them for weeks. She went through several tests and was finally diagnosed with Guillian Barre Syndrome. She is doing much better now. She's home, but she has to walk with a cane and her legs are very weak. I don't think it's a very common disease so that's why they had such a hard time diagnosing it. There are many reasons for seizures so, most likely, this is not what you have, but I wanted to make you aware of it since it is so hard to diagnose. Take care of yourself!
