Seeking Advice on How to Get Three Year Old to Not Grind Her Teeth

Recently my three almost four year old is grinding her teeth. I really do not think this is a nervous habit, and I do not know if she does it while she sleeps. The only time that my husband and I have noticed it is when she gives hugs to us. I know this is not good for her teeth and I want to correct the problem before she hurts her teeth. Any advice is appreciated.

What can I do next?

My daughter is 3 and did that for a short while. Whenever she started doing it I would very firmly tell her "STOP". It would kind of shock her out of it, and I would then tell her she was going to give her teeth owies. Told her she would put holes in her teeth. Well my daughter is very into her appearance (check out some of my other posts) and is really good about taking care of her teeth, so this worked. She doesn't want owies or yucky teeth, so she stopped after awhile. Good luck!

Go to your dentist. He/she can make a mouth guard that she could wear at times. It is initially expensive (mine was $350); however, the repair work is far more expensive. Best wishes!

Our kids do this when they sleep and their dentist said that it won't hurt them since all their teeth are baby teeth. I wouldn't really worry about it. Good Luck.

Good Morning C., You could have your dentist give you suggestions, or just tell her she is making her teeth hurt. A Lot of kids grind at night or when they are cutting molars, it relieves some of the pressure they have when getting these teeth. They are baby teeth so it won't do that much damage. I find myself clinching my teeth, wow the headache I get.. So I saw on the CBS Early Show to put a pencil or pen cross wise in your mouth and bite down on it gently, you will feel your jaws relax and the pressure is gone.

God Bless you and yours C.
