Seeking a Full Service, Affordable Dentist in SW Houston

I am having the hardest time finding the right dentist at affordable prices for my family. My 12 year-old daughter was recently (2 weeks ago) told by our dentist that she needed a root canal in a back molar. He doesn't do them and referred us to "his" Endodontist. This office wants $975 for the root canal and the dentist wants $1000 for the cap! This to me is an outrageous price. We do not have dental insurance, but I'm considering a dental discount plan. My husband and I also both need dental work, but we're holding off on ours so that we can afford it for our children. I would really like a dental office that is full-service and affordable. Any advice or referrals would be extremely helpful. Thanks!

What can I do next?

Dear K.
If you are looking for something affordable you can look into the UT Dental School that is in the medical center. You can either call and see if you can get in, if not you would have to show up with your daughter to their emergency sessions but you have to get there early in the morning because it is on a first come first serve basis. But the prices are alot more reasonable and you can pay in parts.

Try Dr. Don Henckel off of Fondren and Westheimer (right near Vargo's). He is awesome and his office is more than willing to work with you on payments. I have had to have 4 extractions, 4 filings and a series of deep cleanings all over the past 6 months, still paying on all of it.

Tippit-Schleicher Dental Group at I10 and Campbell road is a really good group. They've been there for over 25 years and truly are full service. They also offer and discount plan called Dentex which is, if I can remember correctly as it's been awhile, saves you a lot and is relativly inexpensive. I don't agree with the negativity of the previous poster. Dentists and Doctors for that matter get a bad rep for gouging patients. Last time I checked, people are in charge of their own toothbrush! I think they have to charge so much to cover the costs of doing business in today's lawsuit-happy environment. Enough rambling. Give them a try, we were more than happy and hated to leave but it was too far to travel when we moved.

Good luck. This seems to be the trend. I think so many people have dental insurance that they don't realize how HIGH dental work has become. I have run into the same problem- the regular dentist doesn't do the dirty work- he refers you to a specialist- everyone (except the person with the shiny new teeth) goes out and buys a new BMW.
