Second Degree Burns

My daughter got burned by the iron while with the sitter and was diagnosed with second degree burns. I took her to the emergency room and they gave me bacitricin ointment to put on it and sad to keep in clean with cold water and to keep a dressing on it. Could natural lavender oil and aloe also help with the healing and with the prevention of scarring? Or what will?

What can I do next?

I would do what the ER said. They are experts. I was given Silvadene ointment and the pain was gone, I have no scarring or anything from mine. But I do have a scar that I treated myself.

I would go strictly by what the doctor says. Unless you have a medical degree, I don't think you should go around playing with homeopathic or any other sort of stuff on the burns. I'm all for that stuff when it's something simpler like a cold or whatnot but I wouldn't mess with a 2nd degree burn just because I wouldn't want to risk hurting my child more or having it scar or something. Follow dr's orders! If you have a question like the one you posted here, give the pediatrician a call and see what they say. I hope your daughter gets better quickly!

There are things out there that reduce scaring but I can't remember the name. Don't do anything right now because that is open to infection at the moment so you should be focusing on healing at the moment.

I would ask your doctor about the time frame.

If it makes you feel better I accidentally poured hot water across my hand from an iron when I was eight. There used to be freckles where the burn was but they disappeared when I was a teen. It was a pretty major burn, took off the skin.

I don't know about lavender oil but aloe from an aloe plant does help heal burns. My son tipped a fryer over on him at work and had second degree burns and some 3 degree burns on his arms. He spent a week at the burn unit for it and they put artificial skin over the worst parts of his arms and had me put bacitricin on the rest until they were healed. He came away without any scarring except where he tried peeling the artificial skin off in a ring around one bicept. He was suppose to let it fall off itself as it healed but he got impatient with the last of it. The bacitricin should help with the scarring and the healing.

Just do what they say. Don't add other remedies. My daughter had a pretty bad burn from spilling scalding tea on herself recently and all she did was what was suggested, and it looks fine now.

When I think of lavender oil, I think of its calming properties.
I don't know if it is good for healing or not.
You can use straight vitamin E.
Just buy some capsules and poke them open w/ a straight pin. I do that for myself and my kids.
HTH!

Ack! Anything oil based on a burn is a no-no! Prevents it from breathing and healing!

Didn't know this when I was younger. Was in a car accident, got a burn on my neck from the seat belt (friction) and we put neosporin on it - burned like crazy!!

I would not put any other oils/butter on that burn, especially lavendar. It is very delicate and something like that could make it hurt more unless you know what you are doing.

I have a natural remedies book written by a well respected nutritional consultant. They recommend aloe pulp gel or liquid can be applied to relieve pin and healing. Strong black tea can be applied using cotton balls or a compress.

Tea tree oil is okay for minor burns to soothe and as an antiseptic.

She needs to be a taking a multivitamin w vit b-12, vit A, vit C, potassium and Zinc to help replace lost nutrients from burns.

Vit E oil capsule can be opened and applied to scar once it starts to begin healing to prevent scarring, but not before that when the burn is still tender.

1 tablespoon of powdered vit C to 1 quart of cool water can be sprayed on the burn to help healing.

The dressing is good, but the burn also needs air and to be able to breathe, so do not do the dressing to tightly.

These are some of the more common and easier to do remedies.

To ingest, vit E from 600 IU worked up to 1,600IU daily. Also,

Do not, I repeat DO NOT put anything on her burn without talking and getting approval from her doctor. My step son suffered 3rd degree burns over 70% of his body. Medically induced coma, skin grafts, ect. This was 3 years ago and he still has a medically regimented skin care routine. Burns are serious. If not treated correctly, it can be bad, like death bad. I'm sure not that serious for your daughter but safety first. Please ask your doctor first... You can never be to careful with our kids.
And if one day she still has a scar and is embarrassed tell her to tell people she fought off an angry group of torch wielding villagers to save a poor little hunchback. My other step son use to tell people that the scar on his forehead was from a close call with a shark... Even though we were on land, and he tripped over his feet, and there was no shark just a cement table that jumped right out in front of him. Good luck! She'll be fine.

I think Jo was talking about Mederma, they make some for kids, but you can't apply it until it's healed.

From my experience, most 2nd degree burns don't really leave scars, not enough to notice anyway. If you find it's still a different color come summer, make sure you load the spot up with sunscreen, since tanning increases the melatonin and can make a dark scar vs a light one.

Right now, listen to the ER, you want to prevent infection more than anything. Hope she feels better, I bet you had a small heart attack!!

Infection is a far bigger risk than scarring.
I would follow the medical instructions just as they were given to you.
Burns aren't anything to mess around with. I've had very, very serious burns.
My concern for your daughter would be the pain. I hope they told you how to help manage that.

I would be sure to follow up with her pediatrician.

Best wishes.

I wouldn't mess with it, just do what they told you to do. I had a second degree burn when I was 12 from a curling iron and while I did have a mark there for a little while (about 4 inches long, 2 inches thick) it did not end up scarring at all.

My husband suffered third degree burns 12 year ago. Do as you're told. Burns are very dangerous and can do some damage if not properly care for. Getting the burn to heal is the most important and then worry about scarring.

There may be some scaring for a few years, but I bet it will fade over time.. The medications they suggest should be used. They are so good now.

I burned myself years ago and had a dark area, and now it is all gone.

Aloe will help relieves some of the sting.

I would do exactly as told by the doctor. My daughter got 2nd degree burns from her shoulder to her diaper when se pulled a bowl of hot soup off the counter when she was 3. The ER sent her to the regional burn center that was close by. They applied an Aqua-cell patch and gave us the bacitracin to use. A year later she has no scaring and very little discoloration.
