Reversing a Vasectomy

Hey moms!
I am a stepmom to a beautiful 12 year old daughter, have been married four years to my best friend, and we are deciding to have a baby. However, my husband had a vasectomy 9 years ago, and now we're looking into vasectomy reversal options and costs. Does anyone have experience with this? Know anything about success rates, or can recommend a good urologist in Dallas? We're nervous, scared, and worried about success after the cost--sounds terrible, but y'all know money doesn't grow on trees. We want to do this and begin trying next year. Help!!! Any info would be greatly appreciated.

What can I do next?

Dr. Vince Rogenes and Dr. Nancy Kim, they are with a large group of urologists in Plano but come to Frisco Medical Center once a week.

Hi,
My husband had a successful vasectomy reversal over 5 years ago. He had had his vasectomy 18 years prior to that. The length of time between the vasectomy and reversal is important....the longer the time, the less likely the reversal will work. My husband was a miracle, he had less than 20% chance of working. (We've been blessed with 2 little girls since his reversal.) Also, once you have the reversal, your husband won't be back in working order immediately. It takes at least 12 months after the surgery before you can get pregnant. For my husband and I, it was almost exactly 12 months to the day. We went to Dr. Bush at Plano Medical Center. He was really great. We "interviewed" several doctors before choosing him. I think there is a lot of big promise quacks out there. I can't remember exactly how much it cost but I think it was somewhere around $8000 --again, that was in 2001. So I don't know what the price is now. I recommend that you and your husband prayerfully consider this--it's a lot of money and no guarantees and potentially alot of disappointment. I'll say a prayer for you. Let me know if you want to know more.

Hello H.,
About a year ago, my husband asked the urologist (Dr. Marion Fine with Fine & Fine at Baylor in Dallas) about the reversal and he told him that the cost was about $1500 and it is a day surgery. Give them a call for questions and/or consultation, so that you can be sure of cost and results.

Hi H.,
Great name - my parents picked it for me too! My husband had a reversal in February of 2005. Dr Busch in Plano was our doctor, and the cost was about $8,000. That was out of pocket, insurance likes vasectomies but not reversals! One of the big factors we were told that affects success rates was the number of years after the initial vasectomy - the magic number is apparently 10 years for lesser success rates, so I would suggest seeing someone and having the reversal done as soon as you can, since you said it had been 9 years.
We thought Dr Busch was very good and I would recommend him, even though we had some issues afterward (not as a result of the doc), and we weren't able to get pregnant the "natural" way. However, we feel the reversal was worth every penny - I'm now pregnant with twins as a result of artificial insemination.
One other thing - a reversal is a serious surgery and is not like the easy snip, snip of a vasectomy. It is a 3 to 4 hour surgery, and there is a lot of recovery time. So, just make sure your husband knows that he won't be out playing golf or riding horseback for several weeks after.
Good luck to you, I wish you the best. We are very happy that we chose the reversal route!

Hi H.,

I too am a step-mom and my husband has a vasectomy. Have you and your husband considered adoption? The cost for adoption is relatively the same as a reversal and it's guaranteed. Plus, there is an adoption credit you can claim on your income taxes to help reimburse for the expenses. My husband is not to crazy about a reversal and I cannot blame him since he apparently experienced an unusal amount of pain from his vasectomy. Plus its not guarenteed like an adoption is. Just a thought. I have never had children and he has three. We both are happy with our choice of adopting in the near future.

Hi H.:

The vasectomy reversal is called vasovasostomy (at least it is the translation from the Spanish word). I had read in one of the answers you received that the cost is around $8000 (which is a lot of money). Should you consider going to another country to do it?? There are places like Costa Rica where medicine is really advanced and reduces the cost in more than 50%. In fact, Costa Rica is famous for doing surgerys in such areas as plastic surgery, medicals, eye surgery, etc. If you will like more info write me and I can provide you with a couple of English speaking urologists names so you can contact them directly. The surgery there can be done in a private first world hospital in which, as I said, the cost will be extremely lower than in the US - you can check their web page at http://www.hospitalsanjose.net/portada.htm

Good luck and let me know. M.

H.,
Hi! My hubby had his reversed with Dr. Cary L. Leverett out of New Braunfels. He does it as a ministry to people who want more children. The cost is $2800 and he has a VERY high success rate.
We have a precious little girl now. We know several other families that have used him and also had success. He is a great Christian man. It sounds like you have several other options closer to home, but,if you want to check into him go to www.reversals.com or call him at ###-###-####
Good luck~

There is a place in Houston that guarantees the reversal or your money back. My father had a vasectomy done in 1974, and had a reversal in 1994-95, of course right after they received their money back at the end of the guarantee period, his 2nd wife got pregnant. He was laid up in bed for 2 days and said that it wasn't to bad. I am not sure of the name, I have only seen billboard signs for it. Hope this helps and Good Luck..
