This is so not a "sexy" qustion but I was wondering how many of you got replacement windows for you house? We have a 200 year old house but the outside is vinyl siding. The inside is pretty traditional looking but its really time to replace our 100 year old windows. How many of you have done this? If you so, what brand did you go with and why? Did you do wood or vinyl? We would like to go with wood but it twice the price! Is it worth it? What was your experience? Thank you!
I just wanted to clarify that the house is not in the historical register so we can do what we want. By wood I mean wood on the inside not the outside like we have now. The outside would be alluminun clad. The wood on the inside is 2 times the price. Is there a vinyl product that looks nice and lasts?
Wood looks great but need periodic maintenance. Wood rot is also a significant concern. Vinyl or aluminum frame windows are long term solutions IMHO. Brand names come at $$$$$. I would look for vinyl window manufacturers in the area and team up with them for significant savings. BTDT - Been there, done that :). You will save a bundle and some do offer decent warranty.
What about wood clad windows? I think you can get vinyl or aluminum on the outside and then the inside are wood, which would go well w/ your interior....
Whoever you with check them out on the BBB also if your house already has vinyl siding then you could still get the vinyl windows there are many styles to choose from. We replaced all the bedroom windows in the spring in my 50 year old house and what a difference it has been(great). Also if you do it by the end of the year you can get the tax break for energy efficacy. Expect to pay between $375-$1800 a window depending on size and quality.Good Luck!

Stay away from "the Window Man" - they are here in VA - I don't know about NJ - but here in VA I would STAY AWAY from "the Window Man".
Make sure your house isn't registered as a "historical" house. You will find replacing your windows will save you a ton of money in heating and cooling costs.
We used vinyl replacement windows and regret it. Wood is more expensive and does require more upkeep (painting, etc.) but to me - is well worth the cost. They look better and offer more options for color, etc.
