I am currently taking the highest dosage of Zofran, 8mg every eight hours. It has been amazing for me. I have severe nausea and vomiting everyday and had already lost 10 pounds in a month. I haven't thrown up since I started taking it a week ago. It makes me very nervous to take this medication especially during my first trimester. I am almost 10 weeks along. I've seen a few articles online that show a small link to Autism. I know it hasn't been widely studied in pregnant women. From what I understand, it definitely affects the serotonin levels in your brain and I just can't help but think that it is being passed on to my baby in this crucial time of brain development. I would love to have feedback from other moms who have taken it during pregnancy. It would be incredibly encouraging to hear many moms say their kiddos are happy and healthy after taking it during pregnancy. Thank you in advance for your help!
I just want to say a big THANK YOU to each momma that responded to my question. Definitely reassured me and helped me to realize that I made the best decision based on what I have control of. I've been able to gain back about 4 pounds already! I so appreciate each of you taking the time to reply, sometimes you just need to talk to a mom instead of a pharmacist : )
Hi! I took it throughout my pregnancy because I was sick till the day I deleivered my babies. Mine are all perfect- healthy! Good luck to you!! Hope you feel better very soon.
I was on zofran my ENTIRE pregnancy, like daily. I've never heard of those studies and my doctor didn't have ANY issues prescribing it to me. It's way more dangerous to dehydrate you and your baby than a tiny chance that some study out there may have found a tiny link to autism... I was on it for both of my pregnancies. And i was on 10mg so no worries :)
rather than scaring yourself reading all this stuff online, just weigh out your risks/benefits... clearly, you cannot healthfully nurture a growing fetus when you're losing 10 lbs per month. i was in that situation as well, you do what YOU have to do - it sounds like you are doing just that! i would advise you to take 3 colace(stool softener, it's not absorbed into your bloodstream) with EVERY dose of zofran - that stuff can cause constipation to the point of impaction - headaches are also an issue with it. try to relax and keep your eye on the prize!
Zofran is the absolute safest medicine for pregnancy. It is made for people undergoing chemo, who already have severely weak immune systems and have to be careful with what they ingest so as to not interfere with other meds and their overall health. I had severe hyperemesis the entire 9 months and had to take it during all 3 of my pregnancies, so I was on the highest dose possible. It was either Zofran, or lying in a hospital dying with an iv drip for any nutrition, (which almost happened). Really, there was a greater risk to the life of my child and my own health if I didn't take it. So, please be at ease and outweigh the risks/benefits. My children are all happy and healthy, and my pregnancies became a bit easier too once I was able to keep food/water down with the help of Zofran.
I took it with 2 of my pregnancies and my babies are perfectly healthy. I didnt find out until later about the "studies" of effects until someone told me about it. To be honest, I was so damn sick, in the hospital on fluids because I couldnt keep ANYTHING down, when my doctor, whom I trust gave me this medication that made my life go on, I didnt even question it.
Maybe if I wasnt in survival mode I would have researched it more. I was pretty desperate.
P.S. It made me very constipated, I would do some Milk of Mag every couple days to make sure you dont get blocked up. Tmi sorry.
I took Zofran beginning to end. I literally could not keep a bite down without it. (I'm not exaggerating.) My son is one of the smartest, and healthiest toddlers you could ever meet. I'm pretty sure every pharmaceutical has a small link to autism or something similar these days.
The internet can be a very dangerous thing, especially when you are pregnant. Anyone can publish anything, true or not. These are concerns to discuss with your doctor or pharmacist, someone with the education to help you determine what is factual.
However, for the record, I took Zofran for the duration of my second pregnancy, from week 7 until the day I delivered my son. Without it I vomited all day, couldn't keep anything down and risked dehydration. I did talk to my doctor about it, as well as my friend, a pharmacist. Both felt that the benefits far outweighed the risks with this drug. My son was born at 39 weeks 5 days, at 9 lbs. 1 oz. and is healthy in every way. He will be one in three weeks.
Just wanted to add that I took zofran for three months at the beginning of my second pregnancy and my now nearly-four-year-old is perfect! And I totally understand your concern! In retrospect I think I waited too long to take the meds - but baby needs Mama to be able to eat! Best of luck with your pregnancy!
I think I started on it around 10 weeks? I was awful..couldn't eat.. continuously nauseous and with a 2 yr old boy to keep up with. I went on a smaller dosage more frequently (I think it was 4 mg every 4 hours). It didn't "heal" me, but it helped me be functional (so that we didn't have to keep sending our son away to stay with family to keep from burning the house down or something). ;)
After about 2 months on it, I slowly took less and less of it, and managed to stay functional. By the end of my pregnancy I had stopped taking it completely. My daughter is 10 yrs old now... and considered "gifted" at school--no autism spectrum issues EVER. She is incredibly bright and loves to learn. She had a martial arts test this morning (just earned her blue belt), is in her 4th year of playing piano (she also provides the music for our church every Sunday for the Liturgy), is learning Latin (virtual cyber school offers a foreign language for their "gifted" students), and everyone who knows her thinks she is a both a joy and one of the brightest kids they know. She is a very impressive kiddo. Always a positive and respectful attitude with this child, too. :)
I think I can say with confidence, that whatever side effects there COULD be from taking zofran during pregnancy are NOT manifested in her... or were offset by the LACK of side effects from having a mom in total misery and receiving poor nutrition during her gestation.
My sister suffered with Hyperemesis Gravidarum through all three of her pregnancies and was in the hospital for weeks with her first child. I am not sure which medication she took but it was one that is normally prescribed for patience’s that are getting chemo therapy. If she did not take anything I am sure that she would have died from starvation and dehydration.
Her oldest (son) has Asperger’s and major sensory issues, allergies etc. (she also took it the most with the first child). The second child (also a son) has adha and so far no issues like the oldest. And the youngest (a girl) is healthy and not showing anything like the older two.
All prescription drugs have side effects, they are ALL made of different chemicals. Please talk with your doctor about all of your concerns, maybe you can find some kind of alternative if you are not comfortable taking it.
I was on Zofran for both of my pregnancies and both of my girls are fine. I also was on the max dose for 6 months with my oldest and 4 months with my youngest. I started Zofran at 7 weeks with oldest and 5 weeks with my youngest. Before starting it I lost 12 lbs in 3 weeks and was admitted to the hospital for 3 days where they put 8 lbs of fluid back on me.
