My daughter is 3 and 1.2 years old, and she is in a intergrated classroom, receives speech, and special ed and possibly PT. The teachers and therapist think that she has a processing problem. I am wondering where we go to get a diagonoses and if anyones child have this and what they did? I have read a few things about it, and a lot says they have to be older. But, what to do in the mean time. Thanks

What can I do next?

I have been struggling to get services for my child that has been diagnosed with Central Auditory Processing disorder. The school district's guide lines say that a child's ears are not fully developed until age 7 and they can't be tested until then. However, our child psychologist recomended he be tested when he was 5 and the very extensive testing took into consideration the developmental stage of a 5 year old. The speech and hearing center that tested my son gave us a lot of useful information on how to work with his condition for him to have optimal results in school and in the world in general. Good luck.

You keep working on what her issues are and you do what you can until she is old enoug to have a formal evaluation ... really sensory processing disorder does not stand alone and that is probably why they want to wait two books to read

She is old enough to go to a Developmental Pediatrician and find out what is really going on. Make the appointment tomorrow, you can find developmental pediatricians at every children's hospital. Get a full evaluation. Teachers and therapists can tell you what the school may want to call your daughters issues, but you need to own an evaluation and know more about your child than they do. This issue just happens to straddle the educational-medical barrier, but so do many other things, take Cerebral palsey, you have educational needs, but the medical diagnostics and knowing what your child needs, that is for you to do.

It will take several months to get in, and in the mean time, take your daughter to a private speech therapist, ot and pt and see if she needs addtional therapy to what she gets at school. It is unlikeley that she is getting every thing she needs to maximize her potential at school, the school is only obligated to make her functional in the school environment.

www.wrightslaw.com is going to be your best bet for learning about advocacy and these issues. Start reading about identification, and having a private evalaution.
