I would like to know at what age is it "appropriate" for young girls to begin using tampons. I have a 12 year old who hasn't started her period yet. She swims everyday and this is a concern for her. She has an 11 year old cousin who started her period 6 month's ago and she uses tampons. Being raised in a strict Catholic home I didn't use tampons till much later in life. Any advice?

What can I do next?

I started using tampons when I was 12. I was on color guard and our uniforms had short skirts like the cheerleaders. The thought of wearing a bulky pad with those little bloomers was mortifying so my mom let me use tampons. She read over the insert with me and talked to me about TSS. She also got me a little tube of KY to make them easier to insert (though with the newer plastic applicators I don’t know if this is really necessary.)

Since your daughter swims I’m sure she’s having many of the same feelings I did. I would let her use them and let her try out a few different brands so she can decide which ones she likes. I had to use tampex until I went to college and they were not the right fit for my body.

My daughters also swims on a team when my oldest was 13 she was confortable with tampax but my other who is now 12 will not use them she is not ready for them yet so she stays home on those days. I think that it is realy up to the young ladies what to wear and when.

Personally I think it would be ok for her to use tampons when swimming. Tampons do not interfere with a girls' virginity and I think it would be unfair to not allow her to swim when she gets her period. I didn't start my period til I was almost 15, but I did use tampons right away only for swimming. I think I started using them full-time when I was 17 or 18. HTH!

Hi--Even at age 58, I can still remember being that age and feeling so conspicuous and embarrassed about having my period. I also remember the school health teacher telling us that virgins could not use tampons. Luckily my mom was a bit wiser and explained that there is an opening in the hymen to allow menstrual flow to escape. In most girls this opening is large enough for a tampon to be inserted without difficulty. My mom handed me a box and said to give it a try. It took some practice, and it might be best to try when she is not in the middle of a period, but once I got the hang of it, it was easy. I felt like one of those TV commercials--free at last!! Let her try it. Since she is a swimmer, she will be motivated and it will make her life much more pleasant! Good luck!

The OB brand comes in varying absorbencies, and the lowest one is very skinny. I find them much easier to place than the ones with an applicator.

Personally, I find tampons VERY uncomfortable and I dont use them. I'm 30! I think a lot of it will depend on her cycle... it may not be heavy enough for one. However, why not compromise and limit it to only when she is swimming?

Can you enlighten me as to why Catholics don't allow the use of tampons? It's not birth control... so I'm lost here and curious. (I am NOT trying to be confrontational, just curious)

I hate when I see these questions.
And only because a lot of moms are raging over there daughters wearing tampons. I dont mean to be rude, but I am one who shares the truth.
Overall, it is a personal choice if girls want to use them or not. And if she swims, it isnt fair to her if you make her stop when it is that time of the month. If tampons for harmful they would not make them.
Hope I helped!
