At what age do you expect your child to be able to wipe his/her bottom after a bowel movement? How do you teach your child to do this? When can you expect to stop "checking" the wipe job?

What can I do next?

From day one of potty training we taught our son to wipe his own bottom and we would finish for him. I bought him some of those Kan-Doz (?sp) moist wipes made for kids and he really likes using them. He is 5-1/2 and we still need to check that he's completing the job, but he knows that it is HIS job to wipe. When my nephew was 5 and about to go to kindergarten he didn't know how to wipe because his mother always did it for him! He thought it was someone else's job and got freaked about at the prospect of maybe getting poop on his hand. It took almost a year for them to train him to wipe at that point, with lots of fighting and tears. So teach them from the beginning, and don't stop checking until they consistently get it all.

My oldest was a little harder than my youngest. The oldest was almost 4 before he was ok to leave alone and not check anymore. My youngest has taken so greatly it is unbelievable. At 26 months he has started to potty train himself and we have wipes for him to use. He knows not to throw them in the potty, but rather in the trash. He does a pretty good job by himself already so I don't see us having to check but a few more months.

I don't know whats excpected but I can say for my bright elementary child , I still have to remind and spot check as her underwear shows when things have been forgottten, although I allowed my children to wipe on their own and not to be in the bathroom with them early on...... by four anyway when they were willing to whipe and clean themselves.

My oldest son is 5 and still doesnt, he attempted a month ago and made such a mess that he doesnt want to try. But I did buy him some Kando wipes or even Cottenelle wipes, baby wipes sometimes sting. Also, even if I watch him, I make sure that same night he gets a bath and I make sure he is clean. I admit, I should have started earlier, but I really like the wipes they help. My first son was 10 wks early and for my second I actually got the mis-carriage speech, then carried him until 41 wks! Fantastic doctor! Good Luck! My youngest is 2 1/2 I havent taught him yet, I am just excited he is using the potty!!!

Hi C.,

I both of my kids were trained right around the time they turned 3 (one girl, one boy) and it was just part of the process. Once they were using the toilet independently, I did not wipe them or check them and usually everything was fine. The simple rule is wipe til the paper comes clean. Good luck!

It's kind of on going..when you toilet training...you'll teaching them to wipe and as they become proficent using the bathroom, you'll know when to back off. It's probably a maturing issue too. Some people use wipes just make sure...the main thing that you might want monitor is "how much toilet paper is used" ....for your plumbing sake...But usally children get real sense of what's necessary and the hang of it about 4-5 yrs (that's been my experience)

Maybe I've been doing this for too long but somewhere around 5 years I stopped helping them wipe. If they go at preschool or at someone's house they just work it out. It hasn't been my insistence but if the kids called for me to help, I would. Anatomically, it seems hard for them to really reach their bottoms to properly wipe before they grew to certain proportions. Now that I think of it, I even was called to wipe the bottom of a playdate who was 5 1/2.

I hope this helps.
