Poopy? Who Cares!!!

I have a 3 yr old son and we started potty training at the end of September. No such luck, so I went back to pull-ups for a while. My problem currently is that he doesn't care if he has a poopy pull up. He lies to me about it and he fights me to change him. Tonight I'm going to get him some diapers...maybe that might help. Why doesn't he care if he has poopy in his pants. I try to tell him that his bottom will get sore. He doesn't seem to care. Help!!! It's driving me crazy.

What can I do next?

He is viewing it as a power struggle since he knows it bugs you. He is totally not ready for potty training if he's pulling this and I would lay low for a while till he seems interested. Pushing will only hold him back further.

Everything I have read tells me that when they are ready they will just do it... prior to that any vigorous efforts you make will only frustrate you and and your son. My son doesn't give a *poo* (HA!) if he has a gross diaper either (he just turned 3)... it drives me crazy... but I have committed to letting it ride until he outgrows the largest sized diapers (I think pull-ups send a mixed message so have never been into those) and then its poop in your big boys pants and we'll deal with it (hopefully we have some months. Since he is not in daycare or anything I also need to get him more exposure to other kids his age... so he can get the positive peer pressure of seeing the other kids using the potty and not wearing a diaper.
Best wishes!

Wow, it's like we have the same sons, except mine is almost 4! I don't have advice, but I wanted you to know that you are not alone! I will definitely keep track of the responses!

I just wanted to add my sympathy and understanding. My son will be 4 at the end of Feb. and we are dealing with the exact same issue. He will pee in the potty but has no problem walking around all day with poop in his pants. When we try to push him, he stops peeing in the potty also. I have tried bribes and reasoning with him. We even have potty books and the potty Elmo video. So far nothing works. Good luck and know that you are not alone.

My daughter will be 3 in february, she is peeing no problem on the potty and does not care if she poops in her panties, we have tried everything. The only thing that works for me is when she goes (usually in the morning) she will try to hide, I dont leave her alone and when I see she is starting to push I make her go sit on her potty and bring her toys and books. She will go on the potty if I catch her, but its a pain in the butt. Especially since my other little one is 2.5 months old!!! I have made her pick poop up off the floor with a paper towel when she went on the floor. As for the pull-ups, we use them too, but only when we are going to be out for more than an hour and at bed time. We put them on OVER her underware that way she doest get confused thinking it is a diaper. When we put them on too, we have a little talk saying we still dont go potty in our underware, we are just wearing a pull-up incase we have an accident. It works for me. Good Luck

I agree it is a power stuggle. If you shrug your shoulders and say oh well, it will take the fun away from the game. You don't say if your son will pee on the potty. I know a lot of kids that have trained to pee, but the poop thing took longer. My daughter pooped in her pull ups on purpose. One day I decided that since she could poop on the potty (had in the past) but decided not to, she should clean herself up. So, the next time it happened, she cleaned up - which she did not enjoy. Lo and behold, only after cleaning herself a handful of times, she started pooping on the potty regularly. Of course I had to present it like I didn't care, and honestly it bugged me to no end.

Good luck! Potty training is a long, hard process, but you will get thru it.

My son was the same way, and my 3 y/o still is. The older one just all of the sudden decided to go poop on the potty one day out of the blue. We'd been potty training for months and he still wasn't completely pee trained, but out of no where he went poop on the potty. Now he is really good about pooping on the potty (He turned 4 in October) although we are still struggling with accidents for pee. We did bribe him with a prize for the first time he pooped, and then with suckers from that point on if he pooped in the potty. But up until he suddenly did it he didn't care if he had a mess in his pants.
