Polycystic Kidney Disease and Related Aneurysms.... Any Info?

I have recently been told by my doctor that I have Polycystic Kidney Disease. At this point my kidneys are just fine. Aneurysms in the brain are related to this disease, and I have one that the doctor says should be operated on relatively soon. Does anyone know anything about this, and if surgery is my only option? Is there any other way? Can I prevent further aneurysms? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I went in and had the brain aneurysm surgery. Everything went great. The aneurysm was worse than what the doctor had thought, but he fixed me up with no problems. The recovery has gone great! I don't have headaches anymore, and am almost completely back to normal except for my head being numb from nerve damage which could heal in 6 months. Thank God for answering prayer!! Thank you for the Replies to my Request, and the helpful information!
God Bless!!

I would definitly talk to your doctor and ask any questions that you have. If your not satisified I would get a second opinion. Did the doctor or nurse explain very much about PKD or aneurysms? I don't know a whole lot, I'm in a medical assisting program (about to graduate next Friday), if you need any help looking up information on your condition, let me know. We'll be keeping you and your family in our prayers.

If your looking for a second opinion, please go to see Dr. William Thorell. He is the ONLY Nebraska physician who has been trained to do most aneurysms in the radiology lab without major surgery. He was trained at the Cleveland Clinic and is both an excellant surgeon and person. He practices at The University Medical Center.

Hi, V.!

Wow! You sure have been handed a doozy, lately. I am a nurse, who used to work in the emergency room and while I have not had any experience treating PKD, I have had patients come through with brain aneurysms. Generally speaking, people who have their aneurysms surgically repaired, do very well. Unfortunately, if you have an aneurysm that "breaks", the result can be disasterous. While I cannot give you advice regarding your specific situation as I am not privy to you specific information (nor am I a physician), I really encourage you to follow up with your physician(s) to discuss any and all options regarding your situation. Some patients can have their aneurysms stented, which is basically a "coil" that is placed within the blood vessel to strengthen the site of the aneurysm. Not all aneurysms can nor should be stented, as this treatment is determined by the size of the aneurysm, the placement within the brain, and your overall health condition. You do have the right to have all your questions about your condition. If you are unsatisfied with your physician's response to your situation, feel free to get a second opinion, as this too is your right. If your physician feels you need an operation for your aneurysm soon, please get an idea of the timeline he/she is thinking of and try to get a second opinion within that timeline if possible (again, only if you want a second opinion). Due to the potential severity of any aneurysm, time can be of the essence. As far as more information about what PKD and related aneurysms are, there is a reliable web site through the National Institute of Health where you can get straight, easy to understand information about polycystic kidney disease and aneurysms. I advise you to be leary of some of the websites you may come across, as they will feed into your fears and not give you reliable information. Any info you come across on the web, take it to your physician to an open and honest discussion with him/her. Just go to:

www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/healthtopics.html

Good luck, and I will keep you and your family in my prayers!

I wish that I had gotten a second opinion before I had surgery to have my thyroid removed. In my situation, it didn't need to be done. If I had taken iodine and my hormones had been regulated correctly I could have avoided surgery and all the other problems that happened before and after surgery. I would encourage you to get second and third opinions (one of them being from a non-traditional medicine clinic).
Good luck!

Don't ever hesitate to get a second opinion but please take care of this soon. Brain Aneurysms run in my family and they can be devastating if you do not take care of them. Several people I know have had surgery and are doing wonderful. Unfortunately,my mother and sister were NOT lucky enough to be diagnosed before their aneuysms burst. You want to be around for your children so please take care of yourself. Good luck and I hope all goes well for you. I myself am being monitored and I know that as soon as my doctor says that I need surgery I will be doing it. Good luck and I do hope all goes well for you with whatever you decide!
Take Care,
Tam

WEBMD.com is a great resource for all medical questions, plus will have links for sites that are like this only relate to the medical needs you have, if you want to find others with the same problems. Try not to do a search on them, as most of the sites are about the horrible things that happened to them or a loved one with the disease, and not everyone has the same outcome. Good Luck!
