Maybe Jenny McCarthy's book "Louder Than Words" will help you. She talks about her struggles with her son and doctor's visits and his distended stomach, etc. and what she did to resolve the problem. Many blessings to you on the road ahead of you.

sounds like he may be intolerant of gluten or casein. do a search for gfcf diets and remove all gluten and casein to see if things get better.

Hi A.-

Digestive problems and allergies (particularly to wheat and milk) are common in children with autism. I'm sure you've already started researching autism online given your concerns about your son and have seen information about different diets (particularly the GF/CF diet). Your son's problems with his stomach may very well be connected. As you move forward with your son's evaluations, you may want to include a blood test for food sensitivities.

Good luck,
K.

Research a DAN Dr. My friend uses one for her Autistic son, and they found that he has an abnormal amount of yeast in his stomach. After some natural medication, it is balanced. She has had great luck with Maximized Living Chiropractic, and DAN Drs. Good Luck in everything! Message me if you want me to get more info for you!

Hi A.,

I'm not a doctor or anything, but I would have his liver checked. Sometimes protein digestion problems can cause a protein-style malnutrition. Fats exit into the bloodstream near the liver and protein carriers are needed to transport them away from the liver to other parts of the body. When protein is drastically unavailable (is he having any growth delays?) fat accumulates around the liver and it looks like a pregnant belly.

That's one possibility. A distented belly can also be an intestinal worm, but that is unlikely in America. You'd have probably known that by now.

Either way, you're right to be vigilant and should have that checked out.

Good luck.

I have to praise you for your confidence to seek advice!! I am a former first grade teacher and I cannot tell you how valuable early intervention is for our little guys! About his stomach, have you read anything about gluten allergies? I know a another little boy that had similar symptoms. His stomach would get very hard and stick out as well. Obviously, I am not a dr. but this is just something you could research. Good luck and keep up the great Mommy work!

I'm guessing you have taken him to the family pedi. What does the pedi say - have they given you any dr referrals to call?

If not - you need to find a new pedi immediately! I'm sure there are LOTS of mom's on this site that would love to refer you to a good pedi (myself included).

These symptoms are ones that your pedi should have recognized ASAP and definitely by the time your little guy was 3.

It sounds as if you need to be connected to 1 or more pediatric specialists that can assess and treat your little ones symptoms.

I dont know about any medical conditions, but if you're referring to the look that the children have in those commercials for starving kids in africa, my son looked like that when he was around 1 year old. He was eating 10 jars of baby food a day, and breastfeeding, so he wasnt going hungry. What we eventually realized is that he was only eating fruits and vegetables (he didnt like the jars with mixed food in it) so he wasnt getting any FAT. Once we started giving him pediasure and making sure he was getting fat in his diet, he "evened" out.

Hi A., My son has Sensory Integration issues too. To give you a little hope, he is now out of therapy and doing much better! For him, it took about a year. Anyway, as I spent a year researching all of this stuff, I found that food allergies can cause these problems too. With the enlarged stomach, I immediately think of a gluten intolerance. Has he ever been tested for Celiac's Disease? http://www.e-celiacs.org/2-Celiac_Disease_in_Children.htm.

Hi A.,

First of all I have a son with autism and he is doing ok. I might sugest joining a Yahoo support group as there are a lot of doctors that run these groups and you can get some great advice. The idea about a genetisist sounds very good. Also try a homeopath as they have some very good safe remedies as well.
Good luck. You are doing great, it is tough when kids have challenges.
Kind regards,
W.

I would suggest talking to your Pediatrician about genetic testing. I used to work in Pediatrics and it sound kind o flike a genetic disorder, you never know...he may just be out of proportion, but I would look into it further also starting him with Physical/Occupational and Speech therapy if you haven't already. Sounds like he has a great mom and he will go far with a little help!
