We got this from our preschool and it worked great:
4 c flour
2 c table salt
4 c water
4 tbsp oil
4tbsp cream of tartar
food coloring (opt)

Mix all in a large pot. Cook over med heat till dough forms. (don't take it off too soon. Wait till it's the consistency you want). Cool, knead and store in an air tight container.

Here is one that my daughter's preschool uses and it is a good one. It is made with Kool-Aid.

2 1/2 cups flour
1/2 cup salt
2 packages unsweetened Kool-Aid powdered drink mix
2 cups boiling water
3 tablespoons oil

Directions
1. Mix flour, salt, Kool-Aid and oil until blended.
2. Add boiling water, mix with spoon until cool enough to knead.
3. Continue kneading until color is blended.
4. Store in air tight bag or container in the refrigerator.

I am a preschool teacher and this is the recipe I always use. It makes a large batch, so you might want to cut the recipe in half. It stays soft for weeks!

4 c. flour
2 c. salt
4 Tbsp. cream of tartar
4 Tbsp. vegetable oil
4 c. water
food coloring (optional)

Mix all ingredients together in large pot. Cook over medium-low heat, stirring frequently, until mixture thickens and becomes difficult to stir. Turn out onto clean, dry surface (countertop or glass cutting board works well). Let cool slightly and then knead with hands until it reaches a smooth consistency. Store in an airtight container and enjoy!

*Instead of adding the food coloring during the cooking stage, you can make several different colors at once by leaving the play-dough white and then coloring small batches by kneading the food coloring into slightly warm playdough -- just make sure to wear gloves to avoid staining your hands! :)

Here is a recipe for kool aide playdough, it is non toxic made out of food products so if your little one tries to eat it it will not hurt them. We used to use this recipe in the head start program with the kids all the time. Have fun.....

Ingredients
2 1/2 cups flour
1/2 cup salt
2 packages Kool-Aid(you decide the flavour!)
1 teaspoon cream of tartar
2 cups boiling water
3 tablespoons oil
Directions
1Mix dry ingredients, add wet.
2Knead until smooth (careful-- it's hot! may take a minute or two before you can really ditch the spoon and get your hands in there!) You may need to add extra flour for desired consistency.
3 Now grab your cutters and rollers and whatever other playdough toys you like and have FUN!

I've been using this wonderful recipe for 13 years. It's non-crumbly too making pick up easy! Store it in the fridge in a plastic bag and microwave it for a little bit to warm it up to play again.

1c flour
1/2 c. salt
2 tsp cream of tartar

Stir in 1 T oil, 1c water and a few drops of food coloring. Cook until thick, stirring constantly. Allow to cool and then knead until smooth.

• 1 1/2 Tbsp vegetable oil
Directions:
1. In a bowl, mix flour, salt and kool-aid.
2. Stir in water and oil
3. Knead with hands for about 5 minutes.
4. Store in ziploc bag for up to 2 months.
5. Use like playdough.
6. Smells wonderful and takes on the color of the koolaid.

Mine comes from the More-with-Less Cookbook, and I've been using it for years:

Mix together in a bowl:
2 cups flour
2 tablespoons alum

In a pot on the stove, heat to boiling:
1 1/2 cups water
1/2 cup salt
1 tablespoon oil
food coloring

Stir liquids into dry ingredients. Knead until smooth. Store in airtight container.

A couple of notes:

1. The dough will be HOT at first! So, when I knead, I put on a pair of rubber gloves and then rub a dot of cooking oil onto the palms so the dough doesn't stick.

2. Some people don't like to use alum. (It's a pickling spice and helps keep the dough from going sticky, but there were some health concerns about it a few years back: not everyone shared them, but some were concerned.) If you don't want to use alum, the accepted substitute is cream of tartar (same amount), but I've never found it works as well. Cream of tartar dough always seems to come out stickier.

We've used that recipe for years. For some reason, it doesn't always come out the exact same - my last batch was very dry, no idea why - but I suspect THAT problem is me, not the recipe!

Mix in medium pot:
1 cup white flour
1/4 cup salt
2 tbs. cream of tartar

Combine and add:
1 cup water
2 tsp. veg. food coloring
1 tbs. oil

Cook over medium heat and stir. (3-5 min.)
It will look like a "globby" mess and you'll be sure it's not turning out, but it will. When it forms a bll in the center of the pot, turn out and knead on a lightly floured surface. Knead in extra flower until it feels like play dough!

Then have fun!

A little about me:
Mother of 3, grandmother of 2 little boys. Just recently I pulled my old play dough recipe out to make some for my 2 1/2 year old grandson

This is a great recipe I use in my pre-kindergarten classroom. The dough should last about two to three weeks if you keep it tightly sealed. You can cut it in half it makes too much.

2 cups flour
2 teaspoons cream of tartar
1 cup salt
2 tablespoons oil
1 tablespoon food coloring
2 cups water
1 tablespoon extract, i.e. orange, lemon,mint,etc.(optional)

Mix ingredients in sauce pan, stirring constantly. Cook over medium heat until dough leaves sides of pan. Remove from pan and knead for a few minutes.

Hope this helps!
