Pinkeye Question

I have pinkeye in both of my eyes. The doctor prescribed me Polymyxin drops to take, which I started today. Tonight I noticed in my 2 1/2 year old, that it looks like she is getting pinkeye in one of her eyes. My question is, can I give her the drops too? I thought my doctor said I could but I am unsure and I read the whole packet that comes with it and all it said was it was unclear what affects it had on kids under 2 months. Does anyone know if these drops are safe to give to my daughter?

What can I do next?

As the previous poster said, you are NEVER supposed to share eye drops. I had pink eye weekly when I was a child and the drops they gave me were always different than the drops they gave my older sisters and/or parents. Call the baby's pedi. It needs to be diagnosed professionally.

Call the doctor. If you need to use the after hours service to reach her/him or whoever is on call. I would NOT give her the medication without checking first. Many times the strength is different for children than adults and a new prescription may need to be filled for your daughter.

Call your daughter's pediatrician. Even though it's the weekend, someone will be on call who can advise you.

I would call her pedi and explain the situation. They will let you know whether to give her your drops or they can probably call in a prescription for her. I had a similar situation last year and they just called in a kids medicine for me without me having to go in for a visit.

I don't think you are supposed to share eye drops - not even Visine. Too much risk for cross-contamination. With your daughter undiagnosed and under two months, it would be best to get your drs advice, not a layman's. Good luck - I sure hope she doesn't have pink eye too!

I would call her doctor as each child is different.

You could always call the pharmacist and ask. They can give you safety info of the medication. Or you could call your daughter's pediatrician and that way if it isn't safe maybe they would call you in a prescription for something that is safe for her. Good luck!
