Pediatician in Kc/ft. Leavenworth Area

We have just arrived to the area for the next year. Just wondering if anyone has any experience with pediatrics at Ft. Leavenworth? Or could recommend a civilian pediatrician nearby? I haven't always had the best experience with Army docs where my kids are concerned. I have a 2 year old daughter who suffers from frequent UTIs and takes oral antibiotics daily for prevention, and a 4 month old son who seems to have already outgrown the acid reflux he was being treated for, but having trouble with weight gain, and breastfeeding him is a whole issue in itself!! :) Any advice I can get, I will be very grateful for! Thank you!!!

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone who took the time to repond to my question. I appreciate the suggestions and honesty in your answers. I think I am going to try Pediatric Care North, in KC, MO. It is only a short drive from where we are living. I went there a couple of days ago to rent a breast pump and was very impressed with the staff and the facility. It is out of network for Tricare beneficiaries, but by the time we leave the area, our penalty for switching Tricare plans will be passed. You do what you have to for your kids!! If any of you have any experience with this group, I would love to hear about it, good or bad! Thank you all again!!

Hi L.! I also live at Ft Leavenworth and use the doctors at Gentry Clinic. There is only one pediatrician there. We have only seen her once and that was when we first moved here and it was just to get my daughter her referral for a specialist at Children's Mercy. We have seen a couple of other doctors at Gentry that I liked, Dr. Lokstad and Dr. Masterson. I have also heard good things about Dr. Hall. I do not really like Dr. Tomkins (he needs to work on his bed side manner/communication). As far as Children's Mercy, it is wonderful! My daughter sees a specialist in Hem/Onc, but a friend of mine also has a little girl with frequent UTIs. She had a good experience there. I don't know the doctor's name, but I can find out for you if you would like. Welcome!

I take my 3 month old and 11 yr old to a family practice doctor. Dr. McBratney she is awesome. My 3 month old was in the hospital a month ago and our dr. had another come in for second opinion. Dr. Heidgen was her name. She was great. She gave us tons of information with out overloading us and making us feel dumb. I have heard that her practice partner Dr. Mills is good also. I have had personal experience with Dr. McAllister and I did not like her bedside manner. My 11 yr old had her for a short time. He did not feel comfortable with her, that's why I changed doctors. I know how you feel about military doctors. I had a hard time being passed around to a different one while I was active duty on Ft. Leavenworth. Hope I helped you, good luck and welcome to Leavenworth.

I would recommend Dr Debra Heidgen she is my 3 yr old pediatrician and we absolutely love her! We have never had any problems getting in when we needed to and she has a very pleasant attiude and my daughter adores her, as does her Father and I. The staff is wonderful all are very friendly and helpful. Best of luck with your search.

Glad to see this post! I too am new to Ft. Leavenworth for the next year and am trying to find out who our providers are (my daughter is due for her check up soon). I'll give the post-providers a try first I guess, but will quickly look off post if need be!

Fellow military mom here and I used to take my 14 mo old daughter to another pediatrician while my husband was deployed but since he's back and we live closer to Ft Leavenworth, we have to go on post. You're welcome to take your kids to a regular MD (as I'm sure you know) but the pediatrician they have there is Dr. Ganacias. To be very short, not good. I don't mean to offend anyone but I just plain could not understand her broken English hardly at all and she failed to go over milestones and what I should anticipate and diet. She also seemed to get frustrated when my daughter became impatient and wiggly. She didn't "walk me through" the appointment, she just did her thing, said a few sentences and dismissed us. I complained hard core after the second appointment when I asked her to explain things and got no where. Now I have referrals and take her to the pediatrican she used to see even though its an hour away. I hate to be the bearer of bad news :( On the bright side, my personal experiences there for my care has been good. Good luck, let me know if you have any other questions!

As far as your daughter's frequent UTI, have they checked to make sure everything is ok on the inside? My daughter got her first one at 3 months old, and they did some testing on her to make sure everything was ok, and thankfully she is fine, just built pretty narrow and does get about 3 or 4 a year. You can always take your children to Childrens Mercy Hospital, It is in downtown KC MO. They also have pediatricians there who I think are the best. That is where I take my kiddos for everything. Good luck in your search! E.

I have noticed that many have referred you to Children's Mercy. I know it is a drive, but if you do need to go there, my daughter's urologist there is Dr. Ghatti. He is great with kids. My daughter has frequent UTI's too. Due to spina bifida.

I use Dr. Heidgen or Ardeth in the St. John's Medical Plaza. I really like both of them. Good luck in your search.

Hi L. and welcome to Leavenworth! I work for a physicians office in Lansing (Associates in Family Healthcare ###-###-####) and although we don't have a pediatrician on staff, we are a family practice clinic. Whenever Gentry clinic is closed, they refer there patients here to us. My personal suggestion for a provider here is Diana Corpstein ARNP. She has been my provider for over 8 years and treats my entire family and extended family including my 2 year old son. I trust her opinion more then any other provider I have seen and wish she could deliver babies and practice OB care because I would see her for that as well. I know some people would rather see a doctor and that is fine. We have 4 docs on staff who see all ages, 2 docs that see aged 16 and older, as well as 2 PA's and 2 ARNPS. Our clinic has lab and xray on sight as well as MRI, SONO, CT, and some other services that are done downstairs in our Rockcreek Imaging Center. If you do have your heart set on a pediatrician, there is Dr. L. Golon at the Cushing Medical Plaza in Leavenworth (1001 6th Avenue). I personally haven't worked or dealt with her but a lady here in the office takes her children to her and they just LOVE her!! I hope I have been of some help to you.

My oldest daughter had the same problem with UTI's and kidney reflux - it was caught by our ped. She sees a pediatric urologist at the children’s hospital in town.

His name is Edward Belzer (www.ppadocs.com or .org -- I believe). He is located in Overland Park at I-435 and Quivera. I know it’s a longer drive but everyone in his office is wonderful. They have a walk-in clinic every morning and work Saturdays from Oct-Apr.

Welcome to Ft. Leavenworth--we are also a military family. My 4 month old (3/11/08) sees Dr. Ganacias on post and my 3 year old sees Ms. Killian. I'm not sure if Dr. Ganacias sees all infants or just EFMP. I like them both. My 4 month old also has reflux and weight gain troubles. Someone mentioned Children's Mercy--they are AWESOME if you ever need a specialist! Good Luck!
