Has anyone used or is using the Paraguard IUD (the copper one)? I previously used Mirena and had alot of negative side effects with it. I'm consindering using this since it is non-hormonal but would like to hear what others have experienced with it.

Thanks

I had it the first time and no problems with it at all. I loved it! I can't use any birth control with hormones.

The second time not so lucky, I ended up with copper poisening. The dr said its rare and bearly ever happens, but thats my luck!

Hi K.,

I have had a Paraguard IUD for over 10 years now, and I am very happy with it. I bless the day that a friend of mine recommended an IUD, because it liberated me. No side effects at all. I love it. I am now 53 and the IUD I currently have will last until I am 60 - long enough- I hope, since I there are still no signs of menopause...

I have been using the paraguard for 2 years now and it is great. No side effects for me. I do miss the shorter periods that the hormones gave me, but I still think this is a great way to go. I think that after so many years on pills it was time to get away from all the extra hormones.

I am interested to hear the results as I am considering this too. When I asked my Doc about it she snarkily said that she hasn't put one of those in in 10 years and then she heavily pushed Mirena. I swear it is tough to trust doctors sometimes b/c you never know what kind of incentives they get from the drug companies.

I first tried the Paraguard ( not wanting to have any more drugs in my body) BUT apparently my body needs/wanted the hormones. I had Loooong heavy periods that came a few times a month (seem like i was always bleeding and only had a few days of relief), Terrible sharp lingering pains from my sides all the way down to my groin. I'm not trying to scare you - just telling you my experience w/ it. I kept it in for 8 months (too long! lol) and now I've got the Mirena and have had ZERO problems ! Everyone is different and it seems like you and I are opposites SO I'm sure you will have fantastic luck w/ the Paraguard! I say go for it !!!!! GL :-)

I had it for 3 years. I wont take anything with hormones, so this was a great solution. The only side effect was that it was like opening up a sieve - periods were like water pouring out, and lasted 2 days longer. Compared with side effects of those with hormones, though, it was worth it. ANd I second the person who said their doctor thought it was a joke - I had to call several doctors before finding one willing to consider putting it in. And he turned out to be a jerk about it too - tried to make me go to his other clinic an hour away because his main clinic was in a catholic hospital. Tried to scare me about it etc. I never went back to him once it was in.

I love the Paraguard. My periods are longer, but not really heavier, except for the first day. I did have 2 months of periods every 2 weeks, I think my body was adjusting or whatever. Other than that, everything has been great!
