Pain and Thirst

Hi all!! I always get great help and or advice so I though I would post this issue...
My 2 1/2 year old has always loved to drink. He would have a bottle in his mouth 24/7 when he was little and now always wants a juicy cup. ( he drinks only flavored water not real juice due to stomach issues) he will go though 12-14 8oz sippy cups of juice a day... and then still have 3 cups of milk, one at each meal. He seems to have a thirst that can never be quenched. I try to make him wait when he wants another cup of "juice" but that will only last so long. It seems to be getting worse. His babysitter has noticed he has been literally finishing a cup ( in a min or so) then asking... well demanding more... I am starting to get concerned here. There is another part. A few weeks ago he said his arm hurt. He did not fall down or act like it was hurting him, but would be sitting on the chair and just start to cry and fuss. I would ask what was wrong and he said it hurt. this went on for a day or so then stopped. Now today he was really fussy and he said his legs hurt. I asked him what part and he said i dont know. So i pointed to knees... yes, thighs...yes...calves...yes. So both of his whole legs were hurting. Is this just growing pains? He has a history of stomach issues and acid reflux, he just a few months ago got off of zantac for his stomach and still every now and again has issues and gets sick, usually when something hurts.Am I just being over paranoid?? Any Ideas??? Our pedi just left the practice we were going to so I had to just change doctors too... so I dont want to seem like a crazy mom if its just him being 2... Thanks

So What Happened?

Well I went to the doc early ( they asked me to come in on Thursday) and he is not showing any sugar issues. They ran all sorts of tests... and it looks like he just likes to drink... We are watching his legs though. He is still saying they hurt. Thanks for helping all...

I watched a show on discovery health called mystery diagnosis where a little boy had similar symptoms. I don't know remember what the diagnosis was but it could be on the archives at discoveryhealth.com sorry i can't be of more help but this may get you on the right track.

I agree w/ Danielle...he is drinking ALOT and the fact that it seems unquenchable sounds like a diabetes symptom. I would make an appointment with the Dr. and tell them your concerns and go from there in terms of what types of testing (if any) should be done. I would not worry at ALL about sounding too cautious, the Dr.'s understand and most have kids too :) and if anything it will ease your worries to know all is fine :)My thoughts are with you and hope all is well!!

E. - what kind of "flavored water"? If it is propel, or any of the other kinds of waters please be careful. The artificial sweetners in these products, plus the added B vitamins may be too much for him. too many artificial sweetners can cause symptoms of MS. And too much B vitamins is bad for internal organs.

I really hope that this helps. Purified water will be great for him. I have some other options, but I don't want you to think I am selling you something. I just want your son to be healthy.

Have you checked his sugar? I know that excessive thirst is a sign of diabetes. Just a suggestion because it could be affecting his body in other ways also.

I know when someone is diabetic they stay thirsty, but don't know anything about what would be causing the pain, etc. This definately needs to be checked out by a doctor. Children know when they hurt for whatever the reason so don't let this pass without checking it out. Good Luck & hopefully it is just more symptoms of the stomach issues he already has. My advice is to be paranoid over your children, because if you don't then no one else will be.

get him tested for diabetes. talk to the doctor, the over thristy feeling- is he wetting alot too?- could be diabetes. the muscle cramps could be from that too or something else. he may be getting too much juice and not enough plain water.

good luck

Hi E.,
It sounds like a blood sugar problem. I am a nurse, I would make a doctor appt A.S.A.P. for your 2 1/2 year old and have blood work done right away. Why did your Dr. leave his practice? Is there another Dr. in the pratice? If not you need to go find a Dr. right away. This could be very serious. You are not being Paranoid, that is not normal for any child at any age. There is no such thing as growing pains, Trust your Instinct! Get your baby to the Dr.
E. I can not give you medical advice, I am not a Dr. But you need to get your baby into a Dr. right away. Also check with all of your family and see if diabetes runs in your family anywhere. A. M

Hi..whenever there is pain in the legs I immediately start to worry. I have a 5 1/2 year old and 4 year old. They have complained of pain since about 2 1/2 like yours. I take them to the doctor, the doc checks them over, flexes their joints around and basically say nothings wrong. I think you need to get to a pedi quickly, though, just to ease your mind. Is your son limping? Is he acting like nothing is wrong if you distract him with something fun? As for drinking so much, my girls like to drink a lot, too. How is his urinating? What about potty training? What did your old pedi say? I think only regular water is something you may have to lean towards. That would quench his thirst more. The flavored waters seem to make my girls thirsty even more. I agree about the diabetes issue, too. Let us know what the dr. says. Hang in there.

My son started complaining about leg and hand pains at about the same age (he's 4 now) to the point that he would wake up at night crying and sometimes screaming (how scary) about it. Initally, everyone told me oh.. its growing pains. I took him the the pedi and he tested his blood for everything. The thing however that my pedi couldn't rule out was juvenille Arthritis. That didnt even occur to me. Since then his complaints have been far and few between, so I'm hoping that we're out of the woods on that one, however, you may want to write down and keep a log of when exactly and where these pains are occuring and if it continues bring that to your pedi and ask them about the possiblity of Juv RA. Good Luck...
