Packing- What Might I Be Forgetting

Mamas & Papas-

We are heading to England for just over two weeks with our 3 year old. We leave tomorrow. We've packed our clothes, and will be packing our toiletries, light first aid and electronics tonight. Any thoughts on what to make sure to take? Anything you've forgotten before, and regretted not having? We'll be staying in a short stay rental with kitchen and linens, if that helps

Best,
F. B.

So What Happened?

Converter/ Adapter and extra clothes for the plane were already on the list.
It's been 20 years since I was there last, and 10 years for hubs, so we bought a guidebook to bring us up to date with logistics like getting an oyster card, opening times and admissions.

Extra cloths for the plane. Otherwise, You can buy almost anything. I use to take torteas with me, but I can even buy those now.

So lots of money! And clothes for rain, and rain boots. I get cold even thinking about that April drizzle!

Have fun!

neck pillow for the flight?
adapter/converter?

Have you already notified your bank of travel plans so they don't cancel your card while overseas?

Have you purchased any Euros or Pounds from the bank so you have some on-hand for the cab, etc. when you get off the plane at Heathrow? (assuming you are flying into Heathrow, of course)....

Do you have coverage for your plants and pets?
Anyone you trust to pick up your mail so you don't have to stop the mail?

oh yeah....if you are staying at rental instead of a hotel - I would bring a baggie of laundry detergent...it's different overseas. I think Purex still makes the 3-in-1 sheets. If not, then the little pods. I would pack them in my checked luggage...

did you make a list of all the places you want to go?
Pickadilly Square
Stonehenge (was a tad disappointed...)
drive through the Chunnel (haven't done that yet!!)
Cantebury (catherdal is AAAHHH-MAZING!!)
ride the millennium ferris wheel (built after I left)
white cliffs of Dover
Tower of London (nice to do!!)
Big Ben (fun!!)
Warwick Castle (it's a COOL place!!)

Do you have a copy of your passport? if not, make a copy of it and make sure that your emergency point of contact has it.

do you have the travel pouch for money so you don't need to worry about pick pockets? Unfortunately, it happens.

HAVE FUN!!!

Did you tell your bank you will be overseas? My friend's bank shut off access to her account for a couple of days when she was in Africa because she forgot to tell them and they saw the "suspicious activity."

I am packing now for a trip. I think I usually forget toothbrushes cuz we use the same ones at home and you need them until the last minute. BUT for those last minute things I use a dry erase marker on my bathroom mirror to make a check list. In England you might pack ponchos unless you have good rain gear.

the electricity is sometimes wonky in other countries. you might want to check that and see if you need any kind of adapter. my sister in law travels a lot and had to take an adapter to be able to plug in her phone charger and her ipad charger. good luck and have a great time. hope you get to see some castles. where are you going? My brother lived in haywords heath for a few years. he loved it there.

Any favorite snacks your son might not be able to get there? Obviously you can't bring fresh food, but does he like any crackers, cereal bars, etc. that might not be the same over there. I usually try to bring basic OTC meds and a thermometer. I had one once on a trip to FL that unfortunately got used frequently because my then-8-year-old son came down with a high fever on the flight there. One time I forgot it on a trip to Mexico and the same son came down with strep. Fortunately, one of our travel companions had one. That son is now 17 and just came back from a school trip to Spain. The money/passport pouches that fit snug around your waist and under your clothing were very helpful. Pick pocketing is apparently big business in European cities these days and they work in groups and even use kids to help. Battery charger and enough memory cards for any digital camera you might have? My son had both in Spain, but for some reason the new memory card I got him didn't work so he wasn't able to take as many photos as he wanted. Have fun!

I don't know if anyone has mentioned it (haven't read the responses yet), but if you have them, I'd maybe stash a copy of your vaccination records. Also, I'd take a printed list of phone numbers (in case something happens to whatever electronic device you have that information stored on).
Numbers for:
doctors (you and kiddo)
Emergency family contact numbers
auto insurance
Health insurance
cell phone provider
banking
credit card

Have you checked with your cell phone service provider to add international calling (to and from Great Britain only was an option with mine) so that you can easily call home if necessary?

(The option can be removed when you return, so you won't be paying for it forever.)

Basic cold and stomach medicine. I travel quite a bit and even though there are plenty of pharmacies, its nice to have familiar OTC meds for when you get sick.

A book for you. When little is napping or in bed at night it will give you something to decompress. I always try to make sure I have a book with me.

Layers. We were there for 2 weeks in July and the weather was all over the place. We had rain and cold to hot and dry to hot and humid and a few days of nice and inbetween. Glad we packed mix and match outfits to work with the weather.

I don't know you or your habits and can't tell you specifically what you should take with you, but I can suggest what I do when I travel or just have a multi-day event planned. I have a form that I created that lists every single thing for each day's activities. It's mostly for clothes, but I also fill in toiletry items and reading materials and vitamins, etc. From electronics to the clip or scrunchie that I'll use to put my hair up at night. In my mind, I go through my entire day and make note of EVERYTHING that I use. Sometimes I separate AM activities from PM activities. Some days have less structure. I write everything down and then determine where I have room to consolidate or even add a few items that I MIGHT want/need.

Having it all written out helps me to be clear about exactly what I need. For example, I wouldn't just write "make-up". I'd consider my absolute must-haves (foundation/concealer, blush, mascara, eyebrow pencil, lip gloss) and build from there. I haven't traveled overnight yet with my 3yo, but I would imagine that I'd think along the same lines for him--clothes, favorite toys (pick a number), vitamins, toothpaste, soap and other skincare, mix-and-match clothing with multiple changes per day, versatile hat/cap, sunglasses, prescriptions/allergy medication (Benadryl?).

I tend to forget things that I might overlook throughout my regular day, like the flats that I wear between my car and my office, as opposed to the high heels that actually match my outfit. Or the cough drops that I like to keep on hand JUST IN CASE my sinuses start acting up and I get a sore throat as a result. So I write it all down for the days/weeks/months leading up to my trip.

Good luck, and be safe!
