UGH...My daughter's pacifier broke and I told her it was time to throw it away..she didn't even flinch- and threw it in the trash. She just turned three and I know I have waited too long to take my daughter's pacifier away- but she is having a horrible time without it. We only used it for naps and night time- but now she isn't taking naps- just cries for two hours- yelling MOMMY!! At nightime, she cries for about an hour and a half and finally falls asleep because she is exhausted. She has been sleeping through the night but wakes up much earlier than before. I took her today to "Build-A-Bear" and told her Mommy was so proud of her for giving up her paci- and when she is scared to hug her new bear...that didn't work. Can anyone give me suggestions of what to try? I wasn't ready for her to give up naps- just yet!!

What can I do next?

I have written about this before so sorry to anyone who has heard this. My 2 children were terrible about giving up their pacifiers. We tried cutting them, hiding them, trying to tough it out and what finally worked was the Paci Fairy (we call it the Bai Fairy because they called them that.) You have them gather all the pacifiers and put them in a pretty bag and hang them outside for the Paci Fairy - you tell them the story that the Paci Faory takes old pacifiers from big kids and gives them to new babies. The next morning have another bag hanging there with a surprise for them, a present from the fairy. Then when we were out we woudl point out new babies who got pacifiers from the fairy. This worked really well and it is how we got rid of sippy cups and even toys now. Good luck!

Hello M.,
My boys both gave up naps at 3 too and it was a hard adjustment. As far as the paci goes.. I dont know. Thats a hard one. A part of me says "give it back'! then another part of me says that since she gave it up so willingly, it just is what it is, and that this will be a hard period for her. Giving it up is no small feat.. she should be given lots of reassurance and hugs and cuddles to help her through this difficult transition. Lots of extra hugs and reassurance for mom too hopefully!

Take care and good luck
A.- mom to Dominic (9) and Julian (6)

My son turned 3 in January. He has always slept through the night with no trouble, but during the past few weeks is up forever!! I think it's possible that your daughter's sleeplessness might not be all pacifier related. I have asked my friends what to do. They have told me that he is going through a stage, which could last up to six months. Yikes! But that eventually he will start sleeping through the night again. They suggested a night-light, and even a fish tank to give him something to look at. I sympathize with you because I hate hearing my son cry and feeling restless. I will also add that he doesn't take naps during the day anymore, which sometimes helps, but not always. Best of luck to you!

This sounds OH SO FAMILIAR!!! I took my daugthers pacifier away around 16 months. We just up and took them away, and she was fine for the first day or two. Then she wouldn't take naps, and it wasn't as easy as it used to be to get her to go to sleep at night. But we kept with it, and she got used to not having it. Now, she still doesn't nap as easily, but she naps. And I swear she doesn't sleep as long, but I guess I was lucky to have her sleeping 13 hours at night anyway :) lol Just hang in there... you can do it!!
