I've been seeing commercials lately for those OFF brand clip on things. Do they really work? I would LOVE not to have to hose my kids down with bug repellant everytime they go play outside (by woods). Thanks for input!!!

I tried them. They only work if you sit still and there is no wind. It is better than nothing, but not near as effective as using the spray.
I recommend spraying the clothes. The kids won't get near as many bug bites as without any spray, but may still get a few bites. Also, I used to put a hat on my son and spray the outside of the hat. It helped prevent bug bites on the face and neck.

My husband works for SCJ and everybody raves about them. They are expensive so they BETTER work!

We bought some but have yet to use them. No need when it's sixty degrees outside. :(

I used one when we went camping last summer and it didn't work very well with me. I still got bit. Maybe not as much as I would have without it. I still have refills left, so I will use it again this summer but after I have used them up, I don't think that I will buy anymore.

I can't say anything about the OFF product. HOWEVER if mosquitos are bugging you ;-)) around your home, I do have a fix for that.

The mosquitos were horrible around our home. I put up and electric bug wacker around our home and nothing happened. I went down to a local butcher and asked for a small slice of beef liver. I asked the butcher for extra bloodto go with the liver.

I took the container of beef liver and blood and attached it to the bottom of my bug wacker (1/4 acre size). The next morning, I couldn't see the light in my bugwacker. It had attracted and killed so many mosquitos, their bodies had clogged the grid. I unplugged the bugwacker and washed out the mosiquitos. That night I plugged it in again. I did this for 14 days. Then my wife and kids and I were even able swim in our pool at night and not be bothered by mosquitos.

Good luck to you and yours.

My husband used them last year on one of our campouts and he seemed t think they worked well. I'm surprised to hear that Consumer Reports said they didn't...I usually respect them and heed their advice, so that's interesting. I do agree though that they are bulky to have on your clothing, especially a child. Avon does sell a less chemical-y bug spray as well as the Skin So Soft spray that I've used on my kids. The SSS works okay, the bug spray one works really well. We have an Avon store near us so I usually just go in there, but maybe you know someone who sells Avon?? They also do sell natural spray repellents too that you may like. I forget the brand of the one I just bought, but I got it at Target.

Since it's the time of year there are OFF coupons all over the place and especially in the Sunday paper. If you go to Target.com and go to the coupon section, click on "Household" link. They have an OFF insect repellant coupon for Target stores only. You may use this coupon with a manufacturer coupon found in the papers for even more savings.

Consumer reports tested them and says that they don't work. Watch this video:

http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/video-hub/health/perso...

And also, that the wearer is supposed to be careful not to breath the vapor coming out of the fan?? Just use bug spray. It works.

I've used the OFF clip on and, similar to many others' experience, found that it didn't work well when I moved around. I'll use it if I'm sitting outside, but my kids run around too much for it to be of use to them.
Good luck!

i used them at ball games last summer and they were great, but I haven't tried them on the kids playing outside. The ones I had were kind of big to just clip on your clothes, but they are supposed to have updated the design, so that might be different now. I just clipped them on my chair. They were great for fishing too! I say go online and get a coupon and then give them a try.
Good luck!

I refuse to put any pesticide on myself or my child. Instead we use Buzz Away, it is a natural insect repelent with oils, and smells kind of nice. It works great. We also take a no-smell garlic pill before we go outside. You can find these at Better Health on grand river in Novi, or at Whole Foods.

I don't like spraying Off on my skin if I can avoid it. I have found that if I spray my clothes it helps considerably.
If the kids do get bites a baking soda bath helps take the itch away. For time when you are away form home alcohol wipes, like they use for diabetics when they take their shot work wonders. There is also a remedy called After Bite, it looks a lot like a marker, works great for the itch too.

I've tried them, and as others have said...they don't work very well if you are moving around or if it's windy.

I douse my daughter will bug spray. The friendlier smelling one. Not the strong, burn your nose.

Mosquitos (sp?) are carrying more viral menengitus. In the past 2 months, I know of 2 people that were hospitalized because of it. I don't take any chances with bugs.

I personally haven't used these and wanted to know the answer to your same question-so glad I read all the responses.

Personally I know what they say but when I use the skin so soft from Avon I get bit even worse.....I have tried it several times throughout my life because let's face it Avon has been around forever it seems and I always got tore up worse than if I had put nothing on me.

I have heard that Tea Tree Oil is supposed to work against the bugs but you have to know how much to dilute and such. I have been using it on my dog and researched on the internet to dilute for him. Which was 1 tsp per 1 cup of water and then I place it in a spray bottle and spray him down with it. I haven't tried it as a mosquito repellent yet but I am tempted to do so just to see if it works.....plus the tea tree oil is a more "natural" approach if it does indeed work.

i haven't used them either but i do second the listeren mouth wash. it does help but you have to re apply to the ground every few days. we have lots of "blood suckers" here also and i just let the kids spay the mouth wash around and you can find it at the dollar store also.

no, only if you stay still they help....

I haven't read all your responses, but my concern with these things is that it's spraying/fanning a bug repellant out into the air in your immediate vicinity, for you to breathe into your lungs? That just doesn't sit well with me.

I read somewhere that spraying Listerine around the area that you are sitting will keep mosquitos away. I haven't tried it yet myself, but it is cheaper than the Off clip ons.

I read on a Yahoo! review that they weren't worth the money. Love the idea though.
