Hi-

I was recently put in the Nuva Ring because my IUD had perforated my uterus, but I am experiencing horrible migraines. Is this common with the Nuva Ring, or is it just a coincidence? I would also like to know if you have tried any other methods and if you liked them better or worse.

What can I do next?

I think Natural Family Planning is the way to go! No pills or devices, nothing that messes with my body, and 90-99% effective when learned and used correctly. My husband and I have used it ever since we got married (almost 12 years ago) and have planned all of our babies this way. If you are interested, you can probably find a resource in your area or search online.

I got an IUD because of the migraines I was having during my placebo week on the pill. Do you get your migraines during the week without the ring? If you do, it's likely due to the sharp drop in hormones.

If that's the case, you can try a low-dose pill (the drop isn't as much) or an extended low-dose pill like Loestrin 24 where you only have 4 days on placebo instead of 7 so it's not as long without the hormones. Also, you can get a prescription for a separate pill of a low-dose estrogen for the week of placebos to help keep the estrogen level higher.

If it's not during the placebo week, it could be a lot of different reasons for the migraines.

I'm not sure how the migraines might correlate to the use of Nuva Ring, but it might be helpful to know that Nuva Ring has the lowest amount of hormones of all the types of hormonal contraceptive methods.

I have a good friend who gets migraines if she doesn't get the Depo Provera shots every three months. Like some of the posts, I think it is due to the change in hormone levels.

If you decide to do something like the Depo Provera shots, I strongly recommend that you do some internet searching and have a serious talk with your doctor.

While the shot is a great thing for my friend, I had some severe reactions to it and will never use it again. No matter what.

A low dose pill may be more helpful for you in the long run.

Hi Tasha,
I am on the NuvaRing and have not noticed any migraines since being on it. You might want to talk to your doctor about it. I hope your migraine issue is resolved. good luck.

For me the pill was the way to go. I know some people say they have a hard time remembering to take it but that never was the problem with me. I just kept it in my bathroom so every night when i brushed my teeth they were right there. Plus I never liked the idea of having to have something up inside me all the time so the pill just seemed right for me. And there all different kinds so you can try different one until you fine the perfect one for you (one that doesn't make you gain weight, get sick, plus your periods are really short and little.)

I would talk to your doctor about the migraines. I always just used the pill because I get extremely bad menstrual migraines as well, due to the dip in hormone levels. My doctor actually just put me back on the pill to keep my hormone levels normal, since even migraine medication puts me out for a day or two. And with three kids I can't afford to be laying around in pain. My husband had a vasectomy, so it's not for contraception. Your doc should be able to tell you what's normal for your body.
