Not Your Average Biting Question ...

Seriously, LO is 18 months old and doesn't bite his food (he chews it up, just doesn't bite) .... As in he won't take a bite. It's all or nothing shoved into his mouth. How did you "teach" your LO to take a bite (like from a sandwich or a piece of apple)? Is it just not developmentally appropriate yet? We have an OT and I'll ask her at the next visit ... Just had his 18 month check up and didn't think to ask the ped. I'd like to be able to not tear small bites of sandwich off for him and just cut it into quarters. What do you think mamas?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you ladies! We've got some other developmental things going on related to fine motor kills, so glad to know this is still "appropriate". I do cut everything up and watch carefully the size of his bites. Appreciate the feedback.

@Riley J ... You crack me up!!

I would cut things up smaller and offer him only little pieces right now if he gobbles. My DD would shove everything in her mouth and then choke. We had to cut things up til she got the idea that she could take smaller bites. You might offer him a bite of your food - say a canned peach on a fork and point the end at him and show him "bite". He may need more time if he's a gobblin' babe (Labyrinth reference not intentional). If you want to speed up the process for a sandwich, use a pizza cutter.

You should actually be cutting his food up for him at 18 months. For each of my children, I was still cutting up sandwiches at this age. I just cut them into small bite sized pieces. At the age your son is now, he risks biting off too much and choking on it.

At this age, you need to cut it into bite-sized pieces because they will try to shove the whole thing in their mouth at once. I had forgotten about that phase, but when reading your post, flashes of my GD trying to shove a whole banana into their mouths came to mind. LOL!

It's pretty normal at this age still to just shove and eat. My kids didn't really start eating sandwiches and stuff until at least 2. In the case of a sandwich, just tear up lunch meat and cheese and skip the bread altogether.

That's very normal. It's why for toddlers "bite sized" and mom cutting up all their food (all the way into elementary school) is so iconic. (To the point of it you want to indicate a mom newly returning to the work force, just have the character in the movie/play/etc start cutting up the food of those she's sitting next to at the restaurant. There's LOTS of these references in media, for some reason Mr. Mom is the one leaping to mind).

Dramatic Sigh. I have to say, though, "JustWed" and "biting question" had my mind all the way into the gutter before clicking. ;)

LIke the other ladies say, cut up the food. If you offer hot dogs, make sure you cut them in halves because the size of a hotdog piece, even cut up in round pieces, can make a child choke. Cut those rounds in half. Also, don't give him whole grapes. Cut those in half too because he can easily get those lodged in his throat.
