Nook, Tablet, ereader...what Do You Like

So my MIL hinted towards this as being something she is interested in, and someone who does not read at all, I am looking for input, which one, style do you like the best. What should I know. Any help appreciated. The simple touch reader at $99 is the closest to our price range but would go in with another family member on a higher priced one if a better choice.

What can I do next?

There are lots of choices out there, so you'll have to narrow down the field a little bit. Where does she normally get books? Obviously Amazon = Kindle, B&N = Nook. If she gets books from the Library, both Sony and Kindle have ebook checkouts for libraries (although Kindle books for libraries are newer). Does she want it exclusively for reading or does she want apps too? Does she prefer to read off of e-ink or is an LCD screen ok?Does she have to have touch screen or are buttons ok? There are good readers available for less than $99...it just all depends on what you want.

My personal preference is the Sony Touch. I had an older PRS-505 and loved it. I don't like that the Kindle locks you into their format (and I don't like the ads that come up on the lower models). I like the fact that it has both the touch screen and buttons. I also wanted a reader with e-ink..solely for reading, no apps.

However, I know lots of people that love their Kindles/Nooks. It just really all depends on what your preferences are.

Hope I at least gave you a starting point!

I like my Nook, but it's from last year so it's not the latest technology. I wish I had the all touch screen version. Whatever you get, make sure it has the technology (is it 4G?) that allows you to easily download books without connecting it to the computer. Nook allows for library check out of ebooks. I'm not familiar with the new tablets, but I've heard good things about them.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE my Nook Color and my MIL is getting one for Christmas. We chose that model because we have a local B&N to assist her if necessary plus I am familiar with it. Great price. Great product. Color is great for magazines and other items she'd like to use it with. Easy to use. Good screen size. Uses Wifi which is cheap (no dependable 3/4 G network where she lives). She plans to check out ebooks from the library for free. Overall best product for her needs. $199 but worth the cost to have the color. My Nook Color is from last year and it just did an automatic free software update which basically makes it the same thing as the new Nook Tablet. FANTASTIC!

We haven't tried it yet but I went with a Nook for my 75 year old parents, because we have a BN store in town and they offer free help with the product at any time. I thought it would be a lot easier for them to go into a store to get tech support when they need it, instead of waiting on hold on the phone for long periods of time. Also, when I bought it they gave me a flyer that our local store is having "classes" on the nook at different times for about 2 weeks after x-mas. Beware of the add-ons (protective cases, adapters, warranty) they make the price almost double!

I LOVE my Kindle. The basic one is in your price range. There are alot of free books available for it on Amazon.com. There is a feature on the Kindle were it will also read to you if you want it to. It is a computerized voice but still a nice feature. And you can change the text size if you need the writing to be larger.
